Feel The Power

Up to now, you could easily say "I could do most of this with two copies of Windows Explorer open back to back." But Dopus is far more than two windows full of files.

File management is a lot more than just viewing lists of files. Its also about performing common tasks like copying, moving, renaming, deleting, syncing and comparing. You're going to be working with folders too.

Its here that you will see the obvious improvements in Dopus' handling of these operations.

Copying, Moving, and Renaming

Let's face it; copying and moving are the life's blood of file management. While it is easy to sit back and say "There is no way to make copying/moving better than the status quo" or if you're an old Dopus v6 user "There is no way to make copying/moving better than Dopus v6". Fortunately, you're wrong on both counts.

There are two things that make copying and moving easier in Dopus. First, during the operation, you can rename them on the fly. This is useful if you are copying generic files from one device to another (like from digital camera media) and need to rename them as you copy - file by file - or, get this, with a rename pattern! Below, we're copying a bunch of generic camera files "IMG_xxxxxx.jpg" to another folder. In this example, we're using a wildcard pattern to rename them all to "ranch_xxxxxx.jpg". This window only appears ONCE, regardless of how many files you're copying (as long as they match the wildcard).

The MOVE command works the same way. To invoke this COPYAS or MOVEAS feature, just RIGHT CLICK the appropriate icon instead of right click. Handy, ya?

You can also use this simple system of wildcards to RENAME a group of selected files - but new to V8, Dopus has a FAR more powerful renaming system (more later).

Now, you sharp folks are going to say "Hey, the old Dopus did that!" .. You're right. But, yes, v8 takes these features just a tad bit further.

How many times have you copied a file over another one and lost the original file? Even checking the modified date isn't always proof against accidental overwriting; your camera may name the files the same after a flash card format. So IMG_001.JPG might be newer than another one, but they are totally different pictures taken at different times. Easy to overwrite the images and lose the original. Dopus helps solve this.

When you end up with a filename collision while copying images you can VISUALLY confirm the copy:

Other filetypes offer additional information too. If you collide with MP3 filenames, you'll get bitrates, duration, etc. of both files in this box. This is really handy stuff.

Its also worth noting that you can REPLACE or SKIP this instance, all instances, etc. by using the drop downs on each button shown above.

Deleting

As you might have guessed, you can highlight files and hit DELETE to delete them. This is the same as Windows Explorer and Dopus v6. New to V8 is SECURE wiping.

Based on your preferences, you can perform a secure wipe on files NOT being deleted to the Recycling Bin (i.e. Shift-Delete). You can do multiple wipe passes (to help you meet Department of Defense restrictions on permanently deleting files). This is new to Dopus v8. You can set this up in the File Operations area of Preferences.

So, if you're crazy for security, Dopus can help you out.

There are more features for handling synchronization, dupe checking, etc. but they are worthy of their own page. Before we look at those, there are a couple of more perks in the listers we should talk about before we move on to some
