Where do I get it and what will it cost me?
Well, now that you know you can't live without it, here is how you get it.
Directory Opus Homepage
Price is $59 USD (other denomination pricing available on the site - volume discounts are available - be sure to check in on it).
Before you go "Damn, $60 ... hell no" ... consider all the apps this puppy replaces along side just the great file manager features. As with ALL convergence style software (listen to the September 2004 edition of my classic gaming internet radio show to hear my full rant on the topic of convergence) no 'extra' feature of this tool is going to match a dedicated application (like ACDSEE or your favorite FTP client). However, if you look at the pure configurability of this application, the fact that you can REALLY make it EXACTLY the app you want - there is value in that and its worth the price.
I will say that I'm disappointed at the change in licensing from Directory Opus 6 to 8. The price is a per machine license (formerly, you got a dual license to use at home AND at work). Honestly, I'm a bit fed up with the whole concept of single machine licensing. As far as I'm concerned, as long as its ONE user using it (the person who licensed it) it shouldn't matter if its at home, at work, or on your laptop. ONE LICENSE should be a PER USER license. Of course, version 6 was $89 - now we're at the much more reasonably $59. If they would lighten up on the licensing, it would seal the deal.
Is there a trial version?
You get a FULL 60 DAY no-nags trial - totally unheard of in the industry. This ensures you are absolutely satisfied and have had time to explore the application in detail. It also gives you time to learn you can't live without it.
Is there an upgrade path from Directory Opus 6?
If you are upgrading from Directory Opus 6, you will get special pricing based on how long ago you bought it. This is calculated on the website for you.
Is there a community I can visit with regards to Directory Opus?
Yes. Once you get your feet wet in the application and figure out how everything works, be sure to check out :

Are there other comparative tools that I can evaluate against Directory Opus?
There are 1.21 gagillion file managers out there for you to play with. However, there are only a few even really worth your time. I have NO problem throwing these your way, as they only appear to have the same great features as Dopus - but in reality, nothing compares. Don't take my word for it; use Directory Opus for a week, then try:
Many of these are SIMILARLY priced with half or less of the features. The free ones barely replace Windows Explorer.
That will wrap up this review - I hope you find it helpful in your decision-making with regards to file manager.
