Don't like it? Change it!
First off, I'm not kidding - you can pretty much put ANYTHING you want ANYWHERE. If a button doesn't exist - MAKE IT. Menu doesn't exist? MAKE IT. Don't want this or that? Remove it. Move toolbars almost anywhere. Want an extra somethin' somethin'? Duplicate it. Want a list of FTP sites in the middle of nowhere on the screen? You can. How about your favorites instead of a Folder Tree? Yes, you can. Drag and drop just about anything from anywhere to anywhere. People are building MORE toolbars - like the Nero Toolbar which ships with Dopus now - select files, click a button, its burning to disc. How about that?
When you enter CUSTOMIZE mode, everything flips into edit mode. Right clicking almost anything lets you edit it. You can add premade buttons to existing toolbars. Or, add a new one. The powerful command language will let you make just about any button do anything (check out the command list in the documentation). You can assign graphics to the button states.
Fortunately, its pretty simple to build just about any button that strikes your fancy.
Once in CUSTOMIZE mode you can drag toolbars all over the place - even horizontally and vertically. Turn on some, turn off others. You can even COMBINE toolbar features (did I mention you can move MENUS into other toolbars?) to come up with a SINGLE toolbar that you specifically want. Dopus really can be what you want it to be.
Did I mention that Dopus allows for full keyboard shortcut editing? Don't like CTRL-C for cut? Change it. Need a system wide hotkey to launch Opera from anywhere? Add it - takes you like two seconds.
Don't think about what you can't do to configure Dopus - IMAGINE how you want it to be and you can probably make it. Take a look at this and this. Those are just possibilities.
Import/Export Preferences
Want to bring your cool configuration to work? Give your friend a copy of your settings? No problem in Dopus v8. You can choose WHAT you want to export, then send it over in a single clean file. At last - no more losing your Dopus configuration when you reinstall Windows on your box.
If you really want to learn what you can do with Dopus, read the help file. Check out the RAW commands. Play a little. Its worth pointing out at this point that you CANNOT have Directory Opus v6 and v8 installed at the same time. I use VirtualPC to install software to review and demo on a virtual machine so that I can play with it without worrying about my own system.
This is a LOT to absorb ... So, to help ease the information digestion, I'm going to help out the old Dopus users with my own personal favorite Top 10 new features of Dopus v8 and link to their appropriate area of this review...
