Thread: PSP or GP2X?

  1. #1

    PSP or GP2X?

With the impending price markdown of the PSP (it can already be purchased reconditioned for $145); I wonder, is this now a better deal than a GP2X?

Granted, the PSP has some good things going:

    • There are actual commercial games from major publishers developed for it (some of them pretty good according to reviews)
    • The screen is 16:9 and of better quality than the GP2X's
    • Technologically speaking, it's got more "power under the hood"
    • It's easier to purchase (just walk in to a store and get it)
    • Running homebrew, emulation and backups is easy
    • Apparently, the emulation scene is pretty healthy (MAME owns I hear)
    • Memorysticks are not that expensive anymore and there are cheaper clones out there
    • In some cases, a PSP is actually cheaper than a GP2X

It's been a while since I heard anything new going with the GP2X and it seems to be a european thing; on the contrary, the PSP is all over the news (albeit they're not always positive)

I'm afraid that if I bought a GP2X instead of a PSP, I could end up with an obsolete handheld sooner than with a PSP.

Owners of GP2X, PSP or both... please recommend. My main uses for this kind of handheld would be: Watch movies, play MP3 files, homebrew and emulation.

Also, feel free to object some of my previous statements if they're inaccurate.

I vote PSP. The GP2X has peaked, and the DS and PSP homebrew scene has pretty much passed it up.

PSP can run Windows and Linux using a x86 emulator called Bochs. PSP also emulates PS1 games perfectly . . . nuff said.

The other day I was playing Galaga, Joust, Qbert, and Qix, while I was waiting at DMV.

I haven't heard jack about the GP2x lately, but maybe that is because I haven't heard Shane talk about it lately. If only Sony wasn't trying to lock us out of doing anything useful with the PSP.....

Actually, it was that post of yours that motivated me to start this thread .

That's what scares me the most about the future of the GP2X. Shane has been the GP2X's biggest fan, and he's been eerily quiet lately .

What's the status of the PSP firmware scene? Another thread hinted that you don't have to downgrade to 1.5 anymore?

The GP2X is a great handheld, it really is. It's not meant to be a mainstream device though, for many reasons, so in terms of "popularity" don't expect anything like the PSP or the DS (which is probably a good thing in many ways except in one: don't expect commercial games for it).

In your case I think its emulation, mp3 and movie playback would meet your needs. But the PSP does have superior technology (no comparison) so if you can get an "upgraded" one for the same price go for it.

I have just seen my mate's PSP running Tenchu on the PS1 emulator .....full speed. Looks amazing. The ability to play PS1 games on the PSP has just got me back in to this handheld.
I'll be upgrading to the definitive firmware this week. Now, with this firmware release any PSP can play Homebrew/Emulation plus UMD games. No more ugrading and downgrading to run certain things... this new firmware runs everything. Any PSP can upgrade to it.
PS1 games look great on the PSP screen.
    That's something i believe the GP2X can't do?

I'd be more interested to pick up a $99 PSP if I didn't have to run through the hoops with its firmware to get emulation running on it.

Even still I have to admit...I'm emulated out of my ass right now. I already have access to so much of it everywhere else (My old XBox is only out FOR emulation at this point) that having it portable just doesn't seem cost efficient or worthwhile to me. If I want something portable I have my DS and a slew of newer games to play that I honestly have to ask myself "Do I REALLY need Galaga or Joust portable at this point?".

Bottomline if I had a PSP with every old system emulated on it, chances are good right now I'd still be grabbing my DS for some BombermanLand Touch! instead. Once FrodoDS gets itself in gear I'll be in heaven anyway.

Even the idea of running PS1 stuff just isn't bowling me over...Probably because I played my PS1 stuff into the ground. I actually had the PS1 hooked up a few weeks ago and within an hour had my fill of it because although it is a fantastic system with some excellent games I guess I just haven't hit that "Classic threshold" with the system yet.
