    Trillian 3.0 is out

New version of Trillian is out and worth checking out.

    http://www.trillian.cc

    For those interested ...

    - New LAN only chat (no server side service is required) so you can IM on your LAN without service.
    - You can REMOVE services you don't use (modular).
    - The preference system now owns instead of sucks.

Tons more ... but worth a look.

Is the IRC client in this version even close to mIRC is the question? I might give Trillian a try again if its close enough to the same usability and functionality level that mIRC has.

The IRC side used to crash after prolonged use for me (on v2). It doesn't support scripting but its quick and dirty means of going on irc.

It has all the basics - but as Bryan pointed out - no scripting.

Dunno if the crash in IRC is gone - I would expect it to be but ...

According to the reviews I read on download.com, looks like IRC support is quite buggy in v3. I'm currently using it (Basic), no problems so far, but the only part I have tried so far is Yahoo.

Unlike Shane, I don't care for the new Preference dialog. I don't know why developers insist on trying to m ake everything look like a damn webpage - the old presentation (with the Treeview control) was fine.

I hated the tree view ... crap was put in the WRONG SPOT, blah blah. I like using the event system and it was near IMPOSSIBLE with the old system.

I used the IRC in V2 a lot, and it was just fine. I can't see it being worse. But then, I'm not a POWER IRC user anymore.

Yahoo was buggy during the betas (crashed whenever you pasted large amounts of text to it). Them saying irc is buggy in V3 means that the bugs in V2 probably werent fixed. The way to test irc is just to let it run for a few hours. I am sure its a memory leak causing it to crash.

I am with Shane though, i like the new preferences screen. A lot easier to find stuff. All in all though, V3 is starting to feel bloated. But i guess thats what happens when you try the jam all the features of 4 instant message programs which are already bloated on their own.

Its getting heavier - just remember you CAN remove (physically) all chat mediums you don't use - and it DOES make a difference on the footprint.

Just tried Trillian 3.0 basic and don't see any reason to switch back to it. I moved from Trillian to Gaim about a year ago. For me, Gaim seems to be faster and more stable. If I am missing something, please feel free to set me straight.

Trillian 3.0 basic seems to do weird things with memory to, I observed. It will sometimes sit there doing seemingly nothing and the memory usage goes up, drops back, goes up again. It does this constantly.

Last I checked, Gaim didn't support TONS of things that Trillian did; real basic things.

Then again, I'm no fan of open source software; I don't like how it usually LOOKS ... I don't like how it usually WORKS. Functional - fine. But if its ugly, has a poorly constructed UI, etc. well .. there you have it. I'm not saying this applies to GAIM ... I'm just saying IN GENERAL.

Last I heard about GAIM too was that the protocol fights left it OUT in the cold. When ICQ, MSN, AIM all changed protocols, it was WEEKS before GAIM was back online (perhaps I was misinformed?) - where Trillian, I'm back online in less than 24 hours (so far).

I'm all for "using what works". If GAIM works, then by all means - stick with it. Its cheaper.
