    Firmware 2.5/2.6 downgrader for PSP.

It has been made. Now I don't need a GP2X.

Hardly a substitute for the GP2x. Sony will work a way around it - provided the PSP survives. The difference is that GPH *WANTS* you running homebrew on the GP2x. Sony does not.

Here the problem is if you want to play current PSP games, you'll need at least 2.50 firmware installed. So what happens when you want to play those games and homebrew/emulation? You flash the firmware back and forth regularly. There is always a tiny chance that the flashing process will brick your PSP, regularly flashing the PSP makes this a more serious problem. There's also the dubious unofficial nature of a downgrader, someone will find it fun to make a fake tool that bricks the unit.

I couldn't be hassled to switch firmwares and run numerous tools to use homebrew and retail games on a PSP, so if I ever buy a PSP it'll just be for the few games I'd want to play. The inevitable here is Sony will release a new firmware which is required for some new popular game, and the whole process starts over again. GTA Liberty City Stories was a good example of this, if you wanted to use homebrew and play GTA you were swapping for some time. Or you just bought two PSPs, which I'm sure Sony loved.

Now there's the "modchip" which is basically a second firmware chip that you can leave compatible for homebrew. Provided that works and Sony finds no way to circumvent it, Sony have lost this battle and given the grey market a new product to sell.
