Yeah, its been around for awhile ...

For myself, at least, the fun of playing classic games is doing it TOGETHER - in a real, social environment. Playing 1943 ain't nearly the fun it is when you can't SCREAM to your friend to share energy with you.

Its another use of 'online' that I just feel is wasted on the medium.

    Anyone else?

Personally, when I first discovered killera and realised how good it was even on 56k I almost cried for joy! I understand totally what you are saying Shane, but I live in the middle of the countryside with a few mad people who don't see the wonder of computer games.

Virtually my only chance of a 2 player game is online, so for people like me Killera is a godsend, not to mention a miracle. and then I discovered that it supported mame as well as gens and others  there is a heaven!

    I'm with finebar....

I'll aplogise in advance for late repily and dodgey post i'm about to post due to the fact my keyboard is playing up and I need to replace the damn thing but can't intill friday

Kaillera for me if you guys could'nt tell, is a good send!
I'm 21 and live in england and most of my friends are now at universiaty so I rarley get to vist them very often so we use this programme not only just to play games but to communitcate as well.

On another level though most arcades in England suck these days because they suffer from the "newest games sydrome" were they just stuff there places with new games like tekken 4 etc etc while mean while there is this one small place in near(ish) to were I live which just so happens also to be the most popular arcade around not only because it's got old games but they got the right mix keeping old classics like "THE SIMPSONS" and "Outrun" while still having games like "Tekken Tag" and so on...

Yeah i understand that playing with someone in the same room is better and nothing won't be able to replace that but also at the same time what happens if the arcades near you just stock modern games or you can't even get to a arcade because the nearest one is so far away?

Hopefully I'll build my own cabinet one day and will be able to share the joy of deafeating the "buy guys" with my friends on a local bases but till then I guess Kaillera will have to do

I have serious issues with online play IN GENERAL. This is just a natural extension of my feelings about it.

Game Servers - I don't understand. You play with people you don't know, you don't care about, and that are probably cheating or lifering (they play 16 hours a day because they live in their parent's basement - you get to play 30 minutes a day because you have a life; there is ZERO fun in that). MAKES NO SENSE to me. Gaming is a social thing; I don't consider gaming servers as being a social outlet despite what the lifer Quake people say.

Peer to peer network play - I understand, but isn't practical for I dare say most people.

    Let me explain ...

I have very little disposable time. I work a 40 hour a week job. I have a wife and 2 kids. I have some hobby sites that demand daily attention. What's left is 1) slim 2) scattered 3) precious.

RARELY does it happen that myself and someone I would ACTUALLY WANT to play a game with online are ACTUALLY available to play. See, they suffer the same thing I do; life. One of my best friends goes to night school AFTER the 40+ hour a week job. He has 2 kids and a wife that nags him. For me to ARRANGE a time to play is impossible. Both our schedules change day to day. Its not an impulse thing like kicking in an hour of Burnout 3 when the wife suddenly goes to bed early tonight.

So, because I have a life and friends with a life - peer to peer gaming doesn't make sense. And to play with strangers (I try it from time to time, and am disgusted every time I do it) simply won't do.

As you can see - this sort of thing doesn't excite me. Now, send me a link with a build of MAME with the colors in GORF properly rendering, and then I'll get excited.

I want to know where all these "mature" new breed of gamers get time to play all these online games. I can't be unusual in having a life...

Don't you think if Shane and I had free time you'd hear every month how we were online playing Game X for 2-3 hours?

We don't even get the show out on time...and you want us to spend what little time we have playing games online? Stop that.

I tried Kalleria when i first setup my home network 3 years ago. It made no sense to go out of my house, to the internet, find my wife, who was across the hallway, and play MAME. It was slow, klunky and quite crappy. I am sure it's gotten better since then but then again I haven't read of any updates to it.

When Shane and I are together we threaten to play head to head games on our GBA's but we NEVER HAVE TIME...Man, I want you guys life

I play a kaillera based Mame build to play Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and Metal Slug (and a few other ones) with my friends from work on occasion. I have a lot of fun doing it as well, since the situation is that we can not get together to play very much, so it is mostly a 2am thing. We can trash talk each other with the built in chat and talk about the games when we run into each other at work. Granted it is not the greatest way to play, I agree that half the fun is p;aying side by side sharing the experience of a good game but this is still fun. The games I playwith my friends online like that play surprising well on our internet connections (cable internet with sub 20ms pings to the gateway). For people who cannot get together too often, but can meet up online at unreasonable hours of the morning this program is great.
