    Farewell to the Sony DVP-S560D

I've had this player from the beginning -- it worked well for the past three years, or however long I've owned it. But now I'm getting error codes more frequently and almost every movie's ending is ruined by the player acting up (layer change?). I was thinking about getting this critter at BestBuy: http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3968482

The SONY DVPNS575P looks like a good player according to what reviews I've read, and most importantly it's cheap at $90 or less! Any other suggestions?

I already own a V,inc Bravo D1 --it's good but it can't play DTS and my wife always steals it to play her VCDs! Now if only I could get a 32" TV for $90!

From what I've read the short-lived Sony S560D had laser problems from the get-go. No hacks work on it, and I read one person's comment that he/she tried installing the mod chip and even that didn't work. As soon as I can get an extra $100 or so that player will swim with the fishes ...

Spend the time to compare and contrast units at www.dvdrhelp.com. I've found its worth the couple hours to check out each unit I'm considering. I have VERY specific needs, and this is where I gotta go to make sure I'm getting what I need.

    Thanks, Shane.

(Update). Went for the Sony NS725P, based partly on the reviews. There were 40 reviews with an overall B+ rating. This compares to something like an F- on the old machine

It costs about $50 more but can play more types of media and I figure most of the "cheapest" players have some features dumbed down -- sort of like an A600 compared to an A1200, if you know what I mean.

    You speaka my language!

Most Sony's are notorious for not playing ANYTHING ... they make HORRIBLE DVD-RWs too. I do love my WEGA tho.

Glad you found what you were looking for.

Check out the Phillips 642. Bryan and I both have these - they rock. And are cheap as hell.

If Phillips comes out with a model like that but can play DVD-Audio and SACD... then I'll buy one.

You know, I've been a Sony fan since the Walkman came out. The slightly better version of the Walkman (forget the name) had a great voice recorder. Eventually I bought a Sony TV, VCR, then my first DVD player. Unfortunately now they seem to be cutting the consumers off that they don't want -- their once high and mighty production of CRT monitors is now down to one -- an expensive monitor I wouldn't want. So now I have a NEC/Mitsubishi. Wonder what their strategy is for downgrading like that?

I have to mention I've played a couple of different kinds of DVDs with no problems. It's a great player. Unfortunately it has half the connections my old one did -- it's good only for a player, which is pretty disappointing. But right now cheap is the word of the day for me, so I won't be upgrading anytime soon.
