I am sure he can access the hardware directly to use the touch screen in his own games or whatever, but what's the point, right. I think that is exactly the point. It's cool in a pointless but geeky kinda way
In this case, I am guessing, whoever did this was simply having fun doing it, a bit like playing with LEGO blocks. Like writing cool software that you know you'll never sell or earn any money from (but still is fun to do and helps sharpen your skills).

If it was truly geeky, then we could use the DS touch screens to create control schemes for games/emulators. We wouldn't have to use the crappily aligned buttons!
