One quick comment on VNC. Since it installs as a service, you can have it turned off until it is needed. Plus you can configure it to only accept connections from one IP or a range of IP's. This isn't to say it still can't be hacked, but as with anything, if precautions are taken, it can work very well for remote control needs.

I still have trouble believing that something open source can REALLY be secure.

    But its good to know.

I don't use VNC much anymore PERSONALLY because I need a file trasnfer system - and VNC don't have it. Remotely Anywhere was worth the cash.

Of course you can choose to have auto updating turned off if you wish. The software seems to have a perfect track record of catching new virii which is very important these days. Where it really shines is in scanning speed and the small amount of resources it requires while it is running in the background. This one is definitely worth a look.

The past few weeks I have been comparing 'The Bat' and 'Thunderbird'. I think both of these products are very good but so far Thunder gets the nod because it is free and seems to do everything I need.

I'd like to thank everyone who partakes in these discussions. I find them very helpful indeed. I have been using Opus6 lately because of Shane's recommendation and I am wondering how I ever survived without it.
    Dopus is great ain't it?

Email is really like that. As long as its not OE, and it does what you need, I'm all for it. THE BAT has features I simply cannot live without now and its small, tight, and fast. I have NO problem paying for quality software. Things like Quick Templates and MEGA robust filters aren't something everyone needs.

I would love to eval Nod32 ... got a link? I'll check google too ...

    Thanks.

The trouble with anti-virus software is that, unlike an email program (or something similar), it's kinda hard to road test. I mean, you load up an email program, you set it up, send/receive mail, test out the filters, etc.
But with an anti-virus program, only way I know to put it through its paces is to load a bunch of viruses on your machine and see how many it catches, and I ain't about to do that The only real alternative I can think of is just to take other people's word for it.

I am interested in your opinion of Nod32, Shane ... if you get a chance to eval it.

If you uncheck vncserver, when you originally installed VNC. The server part will not install. BTW, you can always stop the vnc server from bootup just type: services.msc on the command line. Scroll down to vnc server, click stop and click disabled on startup.

The problem is ... when you uninstall a program, it shouldn't leave itself running as a service.

    That's bad .. mmmkay?

Hmm, I am not sure how the VNC part of the thread got off track, but when it uninstalls, it doesn't leave itself still running as a service. My comment about being able to turn it off as needed was intended to imply what Keith_N wrote, i.e. you can use the services plugin to start/stop/disable as needed.

Well, here it is in a nutshell.

Bryan installed it. He used it over a weekend. Then came home and uninstalled it.

The service remained INSTALLED and ONLINE.

He came home from work one day to find someone remote controlling his computer, wiping stuff off his C drive.

My problem here is; when you uninstall something ... it should stop the service, remove the service, and remove everything else. In this case, it did not.

    Bryan ... want to elaborate?

What happened to me with VNC happened over 2 years ago. I have no clue what changes they might have done in the past 2 years to alert users to know about VNC running as a service.

When I installed VNC it didn't even tell you that it ran as a service (and if you use Win9x its impossible for it to run as a service which is probably they don't address the issue, at least back then). Like Shane said, when you uninstall software it should remove EVERYTHING. I should not have to run behind and scour my registry or check to see if it removed a service.

Thats just shit-ty software and i will never use any software that allows hackers easy access in my machine.
