Freenode allows you to register your nickname so no one else can take it.
Once you log into Freenode, type in:
/msg nickserv register password email
You will get an email with text to copy into your IIRC client to complete the registration.
From now on, when you connect type:
/msg nickserv identify password
... otherwise you will get renamed to a guest nick in a couple of minutes.

If you want to add other nicks to your account, like mynameAway, change to the nick then type:
/msg nickserv group
Now that Nick is yours too.

It's great that you're getting people back to IRC. Personally, I want people to go back to hunting and gathering but it's the same idea, IMHO. I don't reject the current paradigm. I just want people to know where it comes from. A good personal anecdote about your history with IRC might make for some good reading.
There was a time when IRC was it. We would sit 24/7 in our channels ... obedient bot scripts kept law and order. Kick fights were legendary. Up til midnight awaiting the new MAME release.
The good ol' days.

I'm in.I've had an IRC client running on my pc's 24/7 since the late 90's.
Why freenode (vs. efnet, etc.).. just out of curiosity?
