Next Xbox includes "anti-used games" tech?

More Nextbox news: Bluray is in, used games are out. I think I'll pass if this is true...

Sadly, used games are a real threat to the industry thanks to opportunists such as Gamestop. Gamestop sell used copies for a mere $5 less so don't expect any sympathy here. Give your money to the people who made the product.

Question is how well does it play bootleg games. 360 turned out to be a huge cat & mouse game but it's still very piratable. And of course every lesson learned from it will be incorporated into the next gen console. It might make it really hard unless you're a real freak/enthusiast... I might just pass.

I don't believe it will happen, I definitely wouldn't be buying the console if it does. If companies are so worried about video game shops undercutting then they should lower game prices.

I made a big rant on G+, but it deserves a permanent home here:

Yeah, which will stifle the game market. These assholes aren't thinking ahead.

How can Little Johnny afford to tear through 20+ games a year? Because he's getting trade in credit from the last one. It's simple math.

    20 NEW games at $60 each = $1200 or $100 a month.
    1 New ($60) + 19 Used ($55 with 50% buy back; $27.50) = $582.50 or ~$48.50 a month.

Make it so only new games are available, you just moved 50% less games. Forget about WHO IS MAKING THE MONEY - consider the fluidity of the market.

What does buying 50% less games really mean? That's less DLC to be purchased. That's less STRATEGY guides to be purchased. That's less merchandise to be moved. That is 50% less visits to the store - which bite into NEW game sales. Gamestops will fold like Blockbusters - and that isn't necessarily the best thing for THE INDUSTRY as a whole.

Imagine a world without Gamestop - a DEDICATED VIDEO GAME store. What? You're going to shop the Top 10 titles at Walmart or Target the rest of your life? Used games will move to eBay where the $.99 + $50 shipping reigns supreme? Even worthless used games will be at near retail prices. Hope you didn't miss last year's blockbuster - because FilthyWhore31 on eBay wants $100 for it.

The impact is TREMENDOUS - and much more serious a threat than the greedy publishers that want cuts of the used game market.

When the greedy publishers go after Craigslist and eBay - give me a call. Until then they are being assholes that don't consider the bigger picture (which is, far and away MORE expansive than I'm painting it here).

Used games are fine but Gamestop's tactics has forced the industry in a corner and the gamers are suffering for it. DLC, online passes, the threat to physical media, and the threat to ownership = All this is a response to Gamestop's exploitation. To say that this stuff wouldn't still be around without Gamestop is being cynical. Publishers are assholes but they're still hurting regardless. A dedicated videogame store should be a friend to the videogame industry. Gamestop is no friend. Their leeching activities threaten the livelihood of the people who create these products.

Maybe I just need to keep my head out of the past, but the part of Gamestop and game shops in general that I enjoy is finding a great, rare and old (usually used) game for GameCube or PS2 or even GBA carts. For the most part, the new stuff can be found at Walmart or Best Buy or TRU anyway so why bother with the Gamestop BS of open packaging and ripoff markups.

The thought of losing access to games once they no longer command shelf space is scary to me. Digital isn't the answer, as I can't get some of the best PSP RPG's on my PSPGo because Sony doesn't feel it's work making games like Star Ocean available digitally.
