You can save a game in the middle which helps and there are collectables to unlock along the way too.
What Davy said. I personally play with the movement speed and talk speed set to FAST. This allows the characters to say stuff and you with just enough time to read what they are saying before it goes away.

You can also unlock stuff for your Mii on this game too. My guy is currently always being chased by a Boo and is wearing a yellow hoodie but there is a ton of stuff to unlock including new animations and AI sets encase you can not be bothered to play the full game

Phew...just got my ass handed to me on the 3rd Mario Board (the SMK background). Target was 18K and to qualify I needed 2nd place or better - came last. Made a really bad decision cashing in shares in one of Diddy Kong's districts far too early and I never really recovered. CPU characters broke a domination I had in a district twice....it's almost better sitting with 3 properties in a district as CPUs don't seem to care how much forcing a buyout costs them to break a dominated district up which hits any shares you have in your district because of the resulting devaluation.

Had left this for a couple of weeks and went online last night. Found a game with 2 other people and a CPU to make up the 4.

I got totally owned - finished last when the CPU player just pipped the leading human. Made a bad decision midway and if I had more time I might have recovered....

It's a bit annoying having a CPU player - especially when they win!! There is an option to not accept CPUs when looking for a game - will have to try that out to see how it works....I'm guessing there isn't a big online presence (although I found last night's game straight away) so maybe accepting CPUs is the best way to get a game going.
