Thread: Android as wifi link?

    Android as wifi link?

    Might be an odd question but...

    Is there an app to turn my phone into a wifi connection for my existing newtwork?
    I would like (if possible) to connect my DS to my current wifi (wpa) network, through my phone, which would be set up as wep. That way I wouldn't have to mess with my network at all, just run the app, have the phone connect to my wifi and route any connections it receives through the existing network.
    Does such an app exist? (even an iDevice app would do.)

    Sure, you could do that - I think - with any wireless tethering app.

    From what I can find, it seems that the process is designed to work the other way and share the phones internet connection with other devices.
    I'm trying to find a way to -- DS(wep) -> phone -> pc/existing network(WPA2) -> internet

    Oh, I see. You want to keep WPA2 on your router and use your phone as a WEP access point.

    Well, I can tell you that I've used my phone's 3G for my DSi via wireless tethering and it does the job.

    I'm (currently) refusing to use anything other than wifi for online stuff, its a pre-pay phone and I couldn't be bothered with paying extra when I hardly even use it as a phone, nevermind anything else :P

    I believe what you're wanting to do won't be possible with any device that only has a single wireless network card.

    Essentially you want your phone to act as a wireless bridge. This implies that it will need to have two wireless access cards to do that. One to connect to your WPA2 access point and the other to create a WEP access point.

    Your best bet would be to buy a cheap router (<$10 after mail in rebates in some cases), create the WEP network and plug that into your existing WPA2 router. You'll obviously have to make sure to disable dhcp on the wep router, but it's certainly possible [it's what I did for a long while]. I went the extra mile and created a virtual lan that completely isolated the WEP enabled network away from the rest of my private network. This meant if someone broke the wep key [trivial] they'd just be able to use free internet and not see any of my fileshares and things like that.

    The best bet is to just unplug the WEP access point when you're not playing DS.
