For all you old school Dungeons and Dragons players.
If you ever played Temple of Elemental Evil released by (now defunct) Troika and published by Atari. You probably know that it was buggy as hell upon release.
What you may not know is that Circle of 8 (Co8) had released fixes to make the game work properly.
Also, they also have been modding new content into the game for the last couple of years and have 5 separate expansion patches.
While I was downloading the newest patch I noticed a thread about Keep on the Borderlands. Apparently a fellow named Shiningted has been working on a completely new module using the ToEE engine! In fact he has released what he calls a fully functional Demo that is 'more than just a demo'. You can get it HERE. It contains most of the Keep and a variety of outdoor areas as well.
According to his recent posts on their forums he is just about done with the Caves of Chaos area and hopefully we will see a full release sometime this year.
It still amazes me how much effort people will put into some of the classics from our past just because they have a passion for it. I can't wait to try the Demo and I'm sure I'll be checking back there for the final release on a regular basis.
In light of the current Digital Distribution threads of late, it also makes me sad that people will probably not be able to do the same thing for some of the current great RPG like titles. With Digital Distribution they will just disappear when the next big FPS comes along and the provider decides they aren't making enough from the nostalgia factor.
In any case if you don't own a copy of Temple of Elemental Evil it can luckily be had from gog.com and the Co8 mods work perfectly with that copy as well as the retail one.
EDIT: And in case anyone points out the irony of me mentioning getting a copy of ToEE from a digital distribution site, I feel GOG.com is different in that they provide digital copies of games that WERE released in Hard Copy format but are no longer available. That distinction is critical. Digital Distribution in and of itself is not bad, it only becomes evil when it is the ONLY way to get something, ever. IMHO anyway.
