Steve Jobs trying to claim victory in the portable Gaming Device Arena.

    According to Touch Arcade:

During today's event, Steve Jobs indicated that the iPod touch is presently the #1 selling mobile game device, outselling Sony and Nintendo's devices, combined. He revealed that 1.5 billion entertainment and game app downloads have passed out of the App Store.
What a bunch of bullshit. I have an iTouch and it is fun for some Quick Play and Run games, but it is far from the winner. When I want 'meaty' games my DS is the one I grab.

When people wonder why we hate Apple and more specifically Steve Jobs, just point then to bullshit claims like this.

LOL! Well come on, no surprise here. As always Steve has an interesting view, and by interesting I mean delusional.

So because you prefer to pick up your DS and play, for meaty games, you feel that that's enough of a sample base to make that claim? And you can include the DS owners here if you like.

Jobs misspoke. He claimed that iPod Touch devices had outsold Nintendo and Sony combined. In later slides, he showed that 120 million iOS devices had been sold (to include Touch, iPhone, and iPads). The thing is, 133 million DS's have been sold and 60 million PSPs have been sold. So there is no way Touch devices came even close to DS numbers, and the PSP likely outsold it as well.

Later he showed a slide that stated they'd sold 240 million iPods to date, many of which are not capable of playing any type of game (some don't even have screens). He probably meant to say that iPods have outsold DS's and PSP's combined, but what does that even mean anyway? If that wasn't it, them maybe he thinks people are stupid enough to swallow his fuzzy math without question. Just about every game site reported he was way off on his numbers less than 24 hours after he said it and Apple has declined to clarify or comment.

By Steve Job's logic, laptop pc's are the runaway leader in portable music players having sold tons more units than iPods. After all, laptops have batteries, a headphone jack, and are capable of playing music files. And games too! I guess iPods are the 2nd best selling music players hehe.

I don't know the numbers myself, but I'll comment on your post only.

You assume he misspoke or is it a documented fact? Isn't iOS the name of the 4th version of the OS? Does that 120 million number of iOS devices include devices that came out before iOS? My 2nd generation iTouch and iPhone 3g are iOS compatible but wasn't sold with iOS. Wouldn't they then add to the 120 million number?

"He probably meant to say"? So your assuming? I'm guessing there's some confusion, but you don't know either.....just an educated guess based on what information you have.

That would just be an outrageous claim......I assume it's in jest.

The 120 million number was provided by Apple, and according to Jobs covered all iPhones, iPads, and Touch devices. He was pretty specific about that, his exact words (confirmed by the engadget live blog) were: "So, how many iOS devices have we shipped since we launched the iPhone? 120 million." The iPhone launched 10 months before Touch did. So no, the older generation Touch devices are already included. While the term "iOS" is new, it's intended to cover all generations of the operating system, not just iOS 4.

Exactly, that's what I meant by "He probably meant to say". What we do know is that based on his own numbers, he's wrong. Kotaku, Joystiq, Wired.com, Engadget, and even Reuters are among the news outlets and sites have called him out on the "error" over the course of the last 24 hours.

It's no more outrageous than claiming that the number 120 million is larger than the sum of 134 million plus 60 million.

    Did you watch the event?

No, didn't watch it.....actually I don't really care for Steve Jobs.

I'm just questioning weather this was all assumption over fact.

    I'm thru.

Here's Forbes saying the same thing I'm saying, along with NOA's response. I like Apple products as much as the next guy, but I can't stomach Steve Jobs.
