I don't know, you'd have to have your company hate hat on pretty tight not to at least be a LITTLE impressed by the iPhone 4: http://www.apple.com/iphone/design/#design-video . I mean, you can criticize iTunes and all the DRM stuff and that Apple has become the new Microsoft, etc., etc., but the bottom line is they designed a pretty darn sexy and feature-rich phone. They make pretty compelling videos too... ;-)

It's interesting to me that this "unified vision" that has made them only marginally successful in computers, has worked so incredibly well in the handheld/portable space. Apple was lucky to survive through the PC era (unlike the less fortunate Atari and Commodore, among others) and now their famous "stubbornness" is finally paying off in spades commercially, albeit in an offshoot market sector.

I guess I'll see soon though if we can.
You are both eligible for an upgrade from what they announced yesterday. "They go on sale June 24th, and AT&T will be giving some extra grace upgrade timing -- up to six months early."

I was really not impressed at all by yesterdays announcement, I think mainly because everything had already been leaked out so it just wasn't that impressive. I would go to an iPhone if they would drop ATT no problem, I think the phone is nice I just can't stand the awful service ATT has in my area.

I wish, but it seems like only those with an iPhone already are eligible. My wife has another AT&T phone on our family plan. Like I said, I'm going to try anyway and see what happens, but I may end up having to wait.

Ah I see, I do believe that it is like you stated and only people upgrading their iPhones.

The only thing I like about the phone is it's pixel dense screen. They explained why the phone was designed the way it is with the line breaks and all but it still looks like so sort of chinese knock-off to me.

Yeah, I think anybody but the most hardened Android fanboy would have to admit that hardware-wise, this is an impressive piece of tech. Doubly so if, unliked the OLED screens on the Android phones, you can actually see the screen while outside in the daytime. It's just too bad it lacks Google Voice, and requires iTunes & AT&T; that's the death knell for this phone as far as I'm concerned.

I won't use the term 'sexy' to describe it though, because I am not sexually attracted to it ...

The problem is - it's LAST YEAR'S impressive piece of tech. Before the end of 2010, there will be other phones dwarfing it - features, hardware AND configuration - before a majority of current owners get to taste it.

Anyone know the DPI on the Droid screen? I simply can't imagine it looking better than that.

And for some, the iTunes thing is actually a plus. It all depends upon one's needs, naturally. I'm in-between. I'm a grudging iTunes user. I use it out of necessity, sort of giving into what I see as the "winner". I tried long ago to go counter-masses with MP3 players, but soon found it to be fruitless, much like being an Amiga fan in the early 90's. At some point, sometimes you just have to give up and give into what most everyone else uses. That's where I pretty much stand with things these days. I try to use as much as can of everything, but at some point, for convenience, I give in to the will of the masses and make it work for me. So, after I bought my wife her (and our) first iPod many moons ago because there was no better MP3 player on the market, I became locked into iTunes. That's how they get you, but really, it's not so bad being locked in and having one place to get everything.

As for the AT&T thing, I think the problems are probably amplified more than they really are, and things are always so rosy with the other carriers (I have a Verizon MiFi device, for instance). I've had pretty good experiences overall myself, though I do understand those in New York City and San Francisco, for instance, would certainly say something different.

"Sexy" like most words has many meanings. I think "tech sexy" is a fairly common expression, so I stand by my statement. Apple knows sexy tech, probably better than anyone else. They don't necessarily have the most powerful tech or the most feature rich (though they eventually seem to get it right after a few iterations), but few can match them on design (and that typically includes user interface as well).

Along those same lines, when the next phone comes out 3-6 months from now that blows the iPhone 4 away hardware-wise, I am stuck with my current phone until next April, so I fail to see how this is relevant. And my contract was only for 1 year... most people are in for 2.

Womp said the same thing to me about it being "last year's tech". What features specifically did they unveil that are on what phones from last year?

I'm seeing gyroscopes and 720p video and unprecedented battery life...are you guys are still talking about the OS itself (which was announced a while back), with the multitasking and tethering and stuff and not the phone itself which is what was announced yesterday?
