He did say that only forward time travel is possible. Which is really not that surprising of an observation. We are technically time traveling right now at 1X speed![]()
Perhaps he should write fiction. Science fiction has always been a nest for the "theoretically possible".There's something very comforting when a scientist as well regarded as Stephen Hawking admits to keeping quiet for fear of "being labeled a crank."
There are several theories about how it would be possible to travel through time, but most of them involve "exotic matter" (strange particles with properties we haven't discovered yet) and wormholes (which could be quite dangerous when brought into proximity of the Earth).
The other part of the theory is that time travel would be limited to the period of time AFTER the time machine has been invented. It hasn't been invented yet, so we haven't met/seen any time travellers.
