Technically, you could get away with using Windows Movie Maker if you're not looking to do anything fancy. Hit up windows update and download the latest Windows Live (under options you can uncheck anything in the package that you don't want like Live Messenger, etc.).
I used it the other day just out of curiosity and found it to be a lot more useful than I would have guessed. Not bad considering it's free.
If you're looking to do something a little more sophisticated with custom DVD menus, etc., Nero, Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere Elements all offer some great functionality but are easy enough to figure out if you haven't done a lot of video editing in the past.

You need a macrovision removal device ... or a better capture card![]()

aagghh I hada capture card on my old pc but after seeing all the rca jacks ,s video plugs on my current machine I figured I didn't need it anymore and to think I used to be able to rip dvd video to play on my gp2x.
Most modern capture cards will strip macrovision off automatically. You could ALSO try better recording software ...
Try this:

I just found my old capture card. I forgot I removed it from my old machine but there is no where to hook up the audio.
I am using AVS4YOU and it's capping World War III David Soul right now.
Personally I gave up on using pc's alltogether for the task and simply got myself a $99 DVD recorder at Costco. Got all my VHS stuff I wanted onto DVD with zero hassle..I also use it to record stuff from DVR.. works great.
