Modern Warfare 2 On Fox & Friends

"A game that lets you play as a terrorist?"

Fox Host: Jim, you got some problems with this game?

Jim: It's mainly for adults and a well made game, but there's no doubt there's a link between violent video games and kids.

Fox Host: Jon, you essentially get to be a terrorist and kill people and it's very realistic.

Jon: You're not actually a terrorist. You're a CIA undercover agent. You are infiltrating a terrorist organization and the game specifically says, when you go into, uh when you work with this terrorist organization. You are um... (Jon loses his train of thought, awkward moment) You are a a a uh a a a CIA operative. (chuckles) I'm sorry.

Fox Host: Jim at what age is this game appropriate or is it ever appropriate?

Jim: The main issue with violent video games, including very well made made games like COD. There's no question there's correlation between violent games and kids blah blah*. It's up to the parent to decide whether they buy the game for their son or daughter blah blah*. You need to use common sense.
*blah blah blah added by reader Ryan

Fox Host: I'll give you the final world Jon

Jon: Kids can definitely pick up the game. If parents buy it for them. I have a buddy who's a manager of a store. Little kids came in to buy the game and he asked if they were over 17. They said no, so he didn't sell them the game. Retailers are doing a good job. It's been proven time and time again.

Fox Host: You bring a violent game into a house with an 8 year old, nothing to stop that kid from playing it and becoming a terrorist...on a video game.

    Jon: That's ridiculous! You're not a terrorist! It's pixelated violence! You're not a terrorist!

    Fox Host: It's violence.

Jon: (closing his eyes) It's not real. It's not real.

Thanks a lot Jon. What made you think you were qualified to speak for us?

I'm surprised this story hasn't blown up even more. If Bush was president he'd be talking about this game to news cameras on the golf course.
This game's in the refrigerator: the door is closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard, and the Jell-O's jigglin'! - chadfx.com

You know ... it just hit me ... I had an epiphany ...

If you're playing video games, you're not watching media programming. Hence, media attacks gaming any chance it gets.

Sure, there are likely more reasons (political, for instance) - but really - why would one form of entertainment do anything but negatively discuss other mediums?

Great point. Stern has been complaining about mainstream media outlets attacking Satellite Radio. I've been a subscriber for 4 or 5 years now, and since subscribing, I can honestly say I've only listened to standard over the air radio less than a handful of times. I can see why regular radio would campaign to destroy Sat. radio...

Well, when terrestrial radio went so far as to censor the word SATELLITE from the phrase "Here we go, here we go Satellite Radio" from the new Black Eyed Peas song "Boom Boom Pow" - I think we're seeing media running a bit rampant and needs some reeling in.

What's sad is - we all wake up listen/watch/read these mediums and we all know how GAMING journalism alone has proven unreliable with reporting on the Wii; just imagine all the other crap we're getting spoon fed (or force fed for that matter).

BTW -- I hear Fox News causes cancer in laboratory animals...

Yeah, kind of like MSNBC and CBS promotes impotence in men.

I'm not playing ball this time. Game maker makes "controversial" video game to get media attention. Gullible media jumps all over the story, feigning outrage and unwittingly advertising for the game. Tons of people buy the game that otherwise wouldn't have been interested, just to see what all the buzz is about. Game maker makes crapload of money.

The level in question was gratuitous and unnecessary--clearly a cheap move to gain attention and increase sales. People have been unfarily calling shooters "murder simulators" for years, so these bozos go and actually make one. They want some of that Rockstar/GTA money. A shame such a talented outfit like Infinity Ward has to resort to this BS. At the end of the day though, it's all about money.

Won't keep me from enjoying a great game but I won't help fuel the "games are evil/media is stupid" debate just to line someone else's pockets with cash.
