    The Official Opera Unite Thread

    http://unite.opera.com/

Holy sh*t... I've been waiting a LONG time for this.

This thread is where we can share public Opera Unite resources.

To celebrate, I've shared a full uncut interview with PR girl for Don Bluth, Melissa Robinson.

    http://home.darkuni.operaunite.com/_root/content/

You will, of course, have to use the latest snapshaot Unite build of Opera to see the content. I've also shared a folder with a pic in it.

Hats off to the Oprea team on this one. Its such a pity the Opera browser barely gets a mention in general browser topics/threads. I never use anything else

I know personally that I can make use of this RIGHT away. Casual file sharing is a real pain in the ass for most people. (and by causal, I don't mean illegal).

Unless I'm missing something, this is just another way to share files, photos, etc, correct? Or is the big deal here that this makes it accessible to Joe Sixpack?

It does it P2P, essentially. Letting you keep your files LOCAL - instead of giving them to Facebook, Flickr, etc. And, of course, offers up other opportunities that are normally handled through social networking.

Heck, you can even host your own WEBSITES on here (haven't looked into the technology tho).

Ummmm, don't they web servers that do that already? I can appreciate the fact that grandma might be able to do it now, but really... what's in it for me? I've already got LogmeIn set up on my machine, and web servers are a dime a dozen. Why do I need this?

Note: If you told me I could run client-side, dynamic scripts/web content inside the browser itself, I might get a little excited But I don't even want to think about the security implications of that.

It's an open architecture. You can make "unite" services for doing all sorts of stuff P2P - these are just the ones the team has built.

The biggest problem with "running your own" is that MOST ISPs BLOCK any incoming "server" ports - like 80 and 21. Most people at home run NAT, which means you would have to set up crap on your router to make it work. You would have to handle your own security model .. it would be a real BITCH to set up. Your visitors would have to use some odd ass port to connect to your ROUTER's IP address.

LogMeIn is great for sharing a quick file ... but how about handling WHO can get WHAT? There is no security other than obfusication.

Sure you could do web and FTP, and but you would have to set up your OWN picture gallery, your own media server, etc.

NOW ... all that being said - you are correct -- with enough elbow juice, you could do it yourself. But, this is done with an established architecture with the ability to add plugins/services easily.

Think of it as the Firefox of Personal Web Servers.

Expect Google Wave to essentially be a clone of this Opera was smart releasing it now - BEFORE Wave.

So I guess what you're saying is, this is supposed to do for file sharing what LogmeIn and its ilk did for remote connecting? In other words, I assume the way this works is that I initiate a connection to your desktop, which is running the browser, and we use some remote server as a tunnel between us to bypass any firewalls and ISP blocks?
