Why wouldn't you use the updater? I'd rather be overkill that not vigillant in catching everything.

All I know is - doing the Waninkoko (I can NEVER remember that name) system update seemed to fix a lot of issues (sans the upside down homebrew channel - and I can live without HBC - there is a fix too).

Yes WADs end up in system memory at some point, whether you like it or not. You can install them PERMANENTLY there, or use the SD for "swap and play" capability. When you "launch" a wad from SD, it's quickly copied temporarily to memory, then executed. But, it doesn't take up long term storage there.

So, technically, you can offload ALL your WADs to SD, leave your Wii memory free and just "hot swap" a wad to it when you want to play it - then it gets dumped - all automatically. This is a recent addition to the system - and it's "organizing the refridgerator" or similar. DSi doesn't even have that yet.

Homebrew channel is installed, and I got a Wiiware title installed (.wad file), and USB loader is up and running.... sort of. A few random questions for the group ...

    1. I'm using the usb loader GX 1.0... assuming that's the best one?
    2. Possible to run WAD files straight off the hard drive/SD card instead of having to install it with the WAD manager? I assumed you could run Wiiware and VC games like this to conserve space on the Wii's system memory.
    3. When I installed the cIOS (rev 14), it asked me what IOS to use, so I told it 36 (the default selection). I dunno if that was the right one, but it seemed to install fine. The Wad manger asks me this every time I start it up too, and I tell it the default it selects, which is 249. Is this correct?
    4. I followed the directions here to format the hard drive using WBFS manager, and said it was successful. I copied an iso to it, and then put it in the Wii. Usb loader said it couldn't recognize the partition, and offered to format the drive for me, so I let it. When the app started, I fed it a Boom Blox retail disc... it named it kind of weird and had no box art, but it extracted to the hard drive and loaded when I ran it. I was quite pleased... that is, until I plugged the hard drive back into the PC to copy the other ISO over, and now Windows can't f**king see it, so it doesn't show up as a drive in the WBFS manager So what to do now? How it set up the hard drive so it can be read by Windows and the usb loader on the Wii?
The weird naming is the hidden name on the disk. You can click the name and rename it from the game menu (ie where you would select to spinning disc, instead of clicking the disk, click the name).

Box art will not show up unless you have it connected to the internet.

The drive issue on the PC I'm not sure about. As Davidmt mentioned try re-selecting the drive letter in WFBS program and then click load or refresh. Also be sure to ignore windows prompt to format the drive when you plug it in to the PC.

I prefer the minimalist approach myself... make everything as 'official' as you can, and only hack what you need to.

Anyway, I installed the safe updater, so now I'm running 4.2. I reformatted the hard drive again using WBFS and now everything works fine. (I realized as I went through it the second time that I set up the partition as logical the first time, which is probably what broke it.)

Anyway, I loaded up an ISO, got error 002, turned on the error 002 fix, and now it works perfectly I still don't have any box art, but I'll figure that out later. Actually, I wouldn't have cared about the box art if they hadn't shown me a f**king box with no art, lol.

Anyway, thanks for the help, guys! I'm sure I'll be back later with more questions

Nice. For the box art you need to create some default directories on your SD card. Did you do that?

Yeah, I see it now... I didn't know there was documentation lol

Guess I'll repartition the hard drive and put the images on there. Do you guys load the loader app from a hard drive, SD, or channel?

From the SD. When I tried loading it from the Drive it crashed every time I tried to change a game name or turn on the 02 fix and save those changes.

I keep a SD card in the Wii which has HBC, many emulators, and USB Loader GX along with the box and disc art files.

I also have a Channel Forwarder to USB Loader so I don't need to load up HBC when I want to play a game from the HD. They update this program quite a bit and you can upgrade right from the application itself to the SD card. Makes it easy but I don't really know why there are so many revisions - I guess I just like keeping things up to date heh.

Yea, I have the forwarder installed as well. There's 2 ways to install it so the Loader is on the main screen. As a forwarder and as a channel. When I did it as a channel it crashed every time I tried to change and save stuff like the game name etc.

For anybody trying to get Guitar Hero 5 to work on USB Loader GX, I snagged this and followed the instructions:

    http://gwht.wikidot.com/hermes-ios222-223

But for the section 'Using IOS222/223 with Configurable USB Loader', just go to the game load settings and tell it to use IOS 222. I also installed IOS56-64-v5146, but I'm not sure if it's required (don't think it is).

BTW: I have no idea WTF any of this does, but as long as it works ... These Wii hacking guides are pretty good at telling you what to do, but rarely do they tell you what it is you're installing and why you need it. They throw around terms like 'trucha signing' like you know WTF they're talking about.
