Well, I am happy to report that I have made quite a bit of progress since scoring a SD card today, but I think I still have a ways to go yet
Homebrew channel is installed, and I got a Wiiware title installed (.wad file), and USB loader is up and running.... sort of. A few random questions for the group ...
1. I'm using the usb loader GX 1.0... assuming that's the best one?
2. Possible to run WAD files straight off the hard drive/SD card instead of having to install it with the WAD manager? I assumed you could run Wiiware and VC games like this to conserve space on the Wii's system memory.
3. When I installed the cIOS (rev 14), it asked me what IOS to use, so I told it 36 (the default selection). I dunno if that was the right one, but it seemed to install fine. The Wad manger asks me this every time I start it up too, and I tell it the default it selects, which is 249. Is this correct?
4. I followed the directions
here to format the hard drive using WBFS manager, and said it was successful. I copied an iso to it, and then put it in the Wii. Usb loader said it couldn't recognize the partition, and offered to format the drive for me, so I let it. When the app started, I fed it a Boom Blox retail disc... it named it kind of weird and had no box art, but it extracted to the hard drive and loaded when I ran it. I was quite pleased... that is, until I plugged the hard drive back into the PC to copy the other ISO over, and now Windows can't f**king see it, so it doesn't show up as a drive in the WBFS manager

So what to do now? How it set up the hard drive so it can be read by Windows and the usb loader on the Wii?
