    This is pretty basic ...

    It boils down to this:

Use the Twilight Hack to install HBC. Install the CIOS software. From there, it's pretty straight forward. Once the CIOS is installed, you can upgrade to 4.0.

    Yes you can.

Here's a link with a tutorial to update to 4.0 while keeping 'interesting" options. After that, you just have to use the iso loader from the HBC. I did it yesterday (updating, used method 1) and everything works fine. I was in the same situation as you, same firmware, same modchip.

I haven't tried the iso loader thought, perhaps i will in the future to help reduce strain on my wii DVD drive (which is noisy as hell).

Obviously this is a little in a grey area, but i'm willing to elaborate if need be.

I have to admit it is much faster to load games from USB than DVD-R with this loader. FMV don't hang on the USB loader compared to Softchip or Gamma loaders

Ok, somebody give me the skinny:

Been reading through the little guide that Shane linked to, plus a little on Wiibrew.org.

As I understand it, if the Wii is running firmware 3.4 or below, I can use the Twilight Hack to install the homebrew channel, and then fire up the USB Loader, all without requiring a mod chip?

Yes, BUT it'd be best if you can downgrade to 3.2 first beforehand. That allows you to install other neat thingies first.
I've done it on my Wii.. but you need to be careful in that you follow the steps exactly as they say.
