    The Official Ipod/iOS Apps Thread

So I've had a good amount of time using the ipod touch and I've come up with a solid little list of great applications I'd like to mention. Also, I highly underestimated how awesome this piece of technology is. It's fulfilling everything I had been wanting and I didn't have to spend an extra $30 on a monthly data plan to get it. The app store was a great idea.

Amazon Mobile: A free special app that is formatted for the touch and allows you to shop Amazon

    Ambiance
: A great little program with alot of different "white noise" type sounds, such as "campfire", "waves", etc. It was a couple bucks if I remember correctly. I turn on the campfire at work at I swear it makes me feel warmer at my desk.

Magic Kingdom Mini guide: For .99 a piece, you can get this one in addition to the other disney "worlds". It's basically an interactive map detailing attractions, restaurants (complete with links to allears.net for full menus), and restroom locations. We're headed to Disney in a few months, so these guides will be invaluable.

AroundMe: A free app that detects your location and instantly gives you a very nicely formatted kind of "yellow pages".

Bible: A free Bible! Works great.

Bubblewrap: (free)Pop bubblewrap for points (this is for my daughter, not me, it's for keeping her entertained in the event that we are waiting somewhere)

Ebay Mobile: It's free and presents you with a nicely formatted look at your "my ebay" page.

    Facebook: Free again, great app.

Google Earth: Free, all the features of google earth.

Grocery IQ: This cost like 2-3 dollars if I remember, but it's a great grocery list app. Save lists, etc. It does a bunch of crap that I'm still discovering.

GW Helmet: A free Game and Watch game!

iDoodle2lite: Free, mainly for the little one to draw with her finger.

iFood Assistant by Kraft: This cost a couple of bucks but its a great recipe program that gives you ideas for meals.

Now Playing: A free program that auto detects your location and pops up with theaters, what's playing, what's new on dvd, and it all ties in with Rotten tomatoes. Very nice.

Quickpedia: A free wikipedia app specially designed for perusing wikipedia

Remote: A free program that allows me to control itunes on my computer straight from the touch anywhere in my house.

Units: A free units conversion app, tons of great uses for this (I've always been bad at this so this reference is good for me)

USA Today: A free news app, fantastic, this is one of my favorites.

The Weather Channel: A free weather app, lots of great info at the touch of a button.

WordJong: My most expensive app at $4.99 but I love WordJong on the DS and this is a grrreat game for having available to kill some time.

Right, I just had this conversation with my father who recently bought a iTouch and was blabbering about stuff that I've long told him I could do on my Blackberry. I didn't understand his reason for getting the iTouch since he was already considering upgrading to a Blackberry as well... Anyway, OK, you don't pay a data plan but at the same time you lose a lot of functionality to some some of the apps (Especially stuff like yellow pages, Facebook, Google Earth, Quickpedia or Amazon and Ebay mobile ETC ETC) when you don't have that data/internet connection on the go. Sure when you are on wifi it is all good but what if you aren't home, or at a Borders bookstore (Which you pay for by the hour) and want to look up and actually make USE of the apps?

I'd be going mental if I had these and couldn't use them anytime I wanted no matter where I was.

I'm at the mall, I forgot the name of that book I wanted to get...Let me look it up on Amazon mobile via my iTouch - Oh wait, I can't...NO DATA PLAN.

The browser is great though, I'll give you that (Although I'd just assume be on my laptop for that since I am at home)...In this case the iPhone is a better choice however. Although I prefer my Blackberry, most of these apps originated on there anyway.

The Magic Kingdom app sounds great BTW and you should have bought WordJong for the DS instead. :P

I am not trying to dog on you or anything, the concept is cool, but I am trying to understand what is so great about running mostly web enabled apps on a device that has only localized wireless.

How is that thing man? I was thinking of getting one because I wanted something small with drag and drop for Howard Stern, audio books and podcasts.

So far, I haven't had an issue getting onto wifi in public. A ton of places have free wifi now. The nice thing is that I don't have to go through a manual sniffer process, the thing automatically looks for open ones and hooks on to it without me needing to hit a button. I'm sure though that as I go on I will encounter a dead/locked area when I need (well, let's face it, want) internet access. The thing with that though, is it worth it for me to pay $360 a year plus taxes and surcharges to have the occasional luxury of having internet access in a place that just happens not to have any free wifi? Probably not (and especially not in this economy).

One thing I kinda like is that I can now catch up on my backlog of Videomasters TV shows ; ). I'm not one to sit on my computer and watch tv, but lounging out on my couch or laying in bed with headphones on and watching it is spoiling me.

Oh I did buy Wordjong on the DS, that's how I knew I'd love it so much. Such a great game.

Regarding the Magic Kingdom deal, they also have maps for Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. It's a far cry from the days I had a scanned stationary map as a .jpg on my palm IIIc .

Right, and I hear you...But at the same time that thing sells for about $230-400 so I'd be concerned that I was getting my monies worth from that and it all kind of goes hand in hand. I pay $26 a month for the data but that also includes instant email (My phone dings the nanosecond I get a Gmail) on top of all the apps etc plus I found a nice loophole for free texting as well.

You may want to download Viigo as it is a real killer app on my Blackberry and I THINK they've recently released a iTouch/Phone version as well? I could be wrong. My wife asked me "What the heck is that?" and I said "RSS news reader"...She was clueless but now she is always glued to it since setting it up for her.

Yeah that is awesome. Speaking of bed, I've recently discovered that my new PSP's web browser is actually pretty damned cool and Monroeworld looks fantastic on it. One problem - The text input is horrendous so for now it's best for merely viewing. Great for a late night catch up though.

Thats awesome dude, I have to see if I can get something similar on the Blackberry before I go next and by then I'll be on an upgraded model too. The IIIc was color right? Man, how far we have come. I had the VII with the antenna and they charged something like $20 a month just to check email on a connection that was more or less 28.8k baud dialup. hahahah. We are so spoiled these days.

    Thanks, I'll check that out.

Text input was my main problem when I had a PSP for web browsing. The screen is gorgeous though! I unfortunately had like 3 PSP's because they all kept having dead/stuck pixels, but I'm sure they've worked those kinks out by now (I got the PSP when it first came out).

I'm sure there is a comparable option, both platforms have tons of apps. Dude, LOL, I totally forgot about Palm IV with the antenna! We have come soooo far. Yeah, the IIIc was color. It was actually a very nice option back then (and when I say "back then" I'm talking about like 2000-2002).

AFAIK it downloads every tune you choose. Minimal filesize though.
