Time has not been kind to .........

I didn't put this in the film thread because you could include anything, but I'm kicking it off with a film. A double film to be exact.

    Salem's Lot.

I just watched it and it looks terribly dated, and the floating outside the window scene is frankly laughable.

Shame really because IT is still as good as it ever was. Pennywise FTW!

The problem with IT ... it looks like they ran out of money at the end ... the very end? Simply HORRIBLE.

IT has a clever, interesting plot, but I just couldn't bear to watch it all the way through, mostly because of Richard "John Boy" Thomas. He might be a wonderful person in real life, but something about his onscreen presence makes me want to grit my teeth until the fillings strike sparks.
Then there's Harry Anderson. His Richie Tozier has to one of the most annoying characters in film history. Damn, you just want to slap him. Someone ought to shoot a few new scenes for a DVD release and have Tim Curry bite his head off at the very beginning. I could really get behind that.

If you have the dvd, you have to listen to the commentary at the end! You will hear the director apologize to you for about 10 minutes about how the ending and the spider sucks. I like that: at least he is frank and honest.

He also recalls something to the avail that as soon as he saw the finished spider model he knew he had a problem it was immediately obvious to him how much this thing sucked and that it would never work. But by then they had pumped so much money into building that spider and everything was so far in that there was no way to change it anymore.

He then says something about the deeper problem with the ending of IT is that in the book (apparently) it is this cosmic battle between good and evil, sounds like some grand scale psychedelic stuff that goes on in the minds of the characters or something, which worked in written form but was totally unfilmable. So... they came up with the spider as a solution

This is just one example how sometimes it _really_ pays to listen to the commentary track.
Other examples: The commentary by Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Milius on the Conan DVD is _absolutely_ priceless. The commentary by Roger Ebert on the Dark City DVD is also amazing: he went to some university and took the film apart scene by scene with all these film students. In the commentary he then talks about the major findings and ideas they had during that session, like the significance of the room number/the color schemes/the shot angles etc. etc.

The spider is in the book too though, but King always works best in book form.

I used to watch Dark Shadows reruns on the Sci-Fi channel. The lamest effects you will ever see. The effects mentioned here look great in comparison.

Dude, they creeped me the hell out when I was a kid. The entire movie had a a real scariness to it overall. I think the voice effects are what did it to me...Especially in that Father's Day story.

I loved that short story in Stephen King's book "Skeleton Crew". The ending always sends a chill down my spine. Makes me think of the utter despair and desolation of that final moment.
