I just got wind of little piece of information that kind of makes me wish I owned an Xbox 360 today. No I'm not talking about Microsoft's exclusive deal for specific GTA4 content. I guess I will have to wait until the 29th. I would tell you all what I'm talking about, but I can't, so I won't.

I put about a half an hour into the game. I'm afraid IGN has rather oversold some aspects of the game. Let me explain.

First off .. graphically, it suffers from "high def sluggishness" that I've talked about in other threads - EXPECIALLY during the first interactive sequence (the movies are all skippable pretty much) with the car driving and the headlights. The sluggishness comes and goes.

Graphically speaking, the game DOES look good with some exceptions. Ever present are the graphics bleeding through things it shouldn't. Punch/push at the refridgerator in the apartment, and watch your hand go through it and magically appear out the side. Hardly what I would expect out of a next gen GTA title - PS2, yeah. 360, no.

Remember in the 1970's classic WESTWORLD where the robots were perfect with ONE exception ... the hands? They never could get the hands quite right? In GTA4, it's the teeth. NO ONE's teeth look right.

Being only a half hour in, all I can say about the story is - it better get better. Oscar award winning? Not yet. The voice acting is spotty with some pretty cliche' characters. Overall, it's completely acceptable - and even good in spots - but I'm not wetting myself over it.

I played the most GTA on the PC with GTA:VC - so this next statement is probably my lack of time on the controls - but ... driving eats ass. Controlling the first couple of cars is like driving around with flat tires. The steering EASILY over compensates and even at the end of the 30 minutes, I was still running into crap like a pinball. Time will tell.

Attention to detail is spectacular though. Just a COUPLE of examples I've noticed ...

First, when you are in the car with someone and they are talking - they are REALLY talking ... if you move the camera around to the side of the car, the "actor" is just talking, gesticulating, etc. as he should be. Most impressive.

I was driving like hell in that piece of sh*t car, and I made a corner too fast and rammed sideways into the railing. I guess no one told them to "buckle up" - because my player actually FLEW out of the passenger side window and into the bay - instead of bouncing off some invisible wall, I fell right in the water - and started swimming! Swam all over the bay, found a pier and crawled off. It was cool.

Anyway, I'm jonsing to play more and see if it gets better.

    Getting giddy...

And did I miss something? How are you playing GTA4?
This game's in the refrigerator: the door is closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard, and the Jell-O's jigglin'! - chadfx.com
