My DVR's harddrive has crapped out and I'm sure Directv will want a ton of money to come out here and replace it. Anyone have any experience with Dish Network?

No, but a buddy of mine always has reception problems when it rains harshly. I like to stick to the cable box. Gets the job done.
Yeah, on a rare occasion with a huge rainfall, it'll temporarily crap out.

I've had DISH for over 4 years now. I don't have a DVR, but my support on all other things has been great. They've even come out and re-pointed my dish the second time I had a problem with rain effects (described later in this post) for free. Unfortunately, as with any other company, when you buy something, it's yours once the warranty dies. I love my DISH. Upgrading equipment, replacing equipment, stuff like that, I have to say, really sucks, unfortunately. As for everything else, I highly endorse it. As for service itself, yes, when it rains really hard, I lose signal. Probably 3-4 times in the last 4 years. Beats the heck out of cable. Heck, if you farted against a phone pole we'd lose cable. Way too expensive, extremely unreliable, and the picture quality doesn't even compare. I get all the local channels as well! And the cost for what I have doesn't even compare to cable or DSS. I pay a little over 60 bucks a month and get everything other than the pay channels like HBO, SKINIMAX, and SHOWTIME. In my opinion, it can't be beat.

Yeah, well...... Why bother?
And remember, nobody does anything they don't CHOOSE to do.
Not sure but I have Direct and while I pay a little extra, it covers everything in case of issues like this.My DVR's harddrive has crapped out and I'm sure Directv will want a ton of money to come out here and replace it. Anyone have any experience with Dish Network?
Some peoples kids... Send them to school, buy their books and all they do is eat the crayons.
So my Directv Tivo that I got 3 years ago has died. Now I find out Directv no longer deals with Tivo, they have their own DVR out and from everything I've read, it SUCKS. Can I just go buy a normal Tivo at Circuit City and use it with my Directv?

I had the exact same issue as you. My DVR went out for my Directv. I bought new off Ebay Directv's new DVR and it SUCKED miserablely. Found a co-worker who had a used TIVO/Directv reciever they weren't using and bought it off them. You should be able to pick up used one off Ebay. Then call Directv and have them switch service from your old box to your new one.
But say I go out today and buy a Series 2 Tivo Brand unit. I assume I can still hook that up to my TV and go through Directv right?
Is it typical of these DVR's to only last 3 years?

My understanding is it will work HOWEVER you will need to find some way for the Tivo Brand to be able to change the channel on the directv reciever. The Tivo reciever will not hook directly to the Coax from Directv. I could be wrong but this is how I remember it.
Cool, I already have an upstairs box that is not in use, I could just bring it downstairs and hook it up to the new Tivo. However, my wife is now leaning towards Comcast cable.
