The Official Metroid Prime Corruption Thread

Those with connections have already had a look at it (arrive date =! sell date). Your thoughts?

Easily the best looking game out on the Wii. Those looking for bragging rights or just the desire to hold up a next gen game reasonably with your other console breathern - look no further.

I've only dabbled - but everything feels ... "right". Controls are tight, everything is SILKY smooth. Hints as tutorials instead of a "tutorial level" - I like that.

A lot of care has gone into the game - and it shows. At least so far.

Coming from someone that only played a 3D Metroid in the DS incarnation, I still felt pretty much at home.

    More as I play more.

Here's a good link. It's a review from Gametrailers and for those who want a GREAT recap of the whole metroid storyline, check out GT's Metroid Retrospective part 5. I swear, Gametrailers is exactly what G4 should be.

Yes! I totally agree. GT's features are great to watch and they update their site so readily. Second to only GoNintendo and maybe GameVideos. But GameVideos sucks. I get the 1up show on iTunes because it's easier to watch it their than having to deal the Gamevideos' crappy site interface which doesn't work well AT ALL!

Seems like a good place to repost these,

    10 Presentation
The best yet in the Prime series, Corruption comes to life with atmoshperic cinemas and voice acting. Meanwhile, a medal system and WiiConnect24 support offer great incentive to keep playing.

    9.5 Graphics
Currently, Wii's best looking game. Retro's artistic sense (good stuff) is second to none. Prime 3 includes a welcomed variety of gorgeous planets to explore and runs in 480p / 16:9 at 60 frames per second (wow, nice).

    10 Sound
The score by Kenji Yamamoto is as moody as ever, even featuring throwbacks to some previous games. The sound effects are punchy and the voice acting is well implemented.

    9.5 Gameplay
Spectacular. Controls better than any console first-person game before it, features great pacing and a fun mix of puzzles and shooting. In contrast, there's a tedious fetch quest and some door loads.

    9.0 Lasting Appeal
At 20-plus hours, it stands tall next to the other Prime games. The single-player affair is a little easier, but you can extend replay by scanning everything or playing again in Hyper Mode.

    9.5
    Incredible OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
    9.0 from 1up.

    Gametrailers 9.6.

    and Nintendo power 10/10.

Hopefully 3rd parties will use the control scheme as an inspiration for a genre which by all rights should be the Wii's strongest.

Alright ... had a little more time to play ...

Let's talk about the controls. I'm using Advanced, FYI.

I'd say that these are the best controls on an FPS to date - and I'm going to DARE say, they actually are MORE comfortable than Mouse+Keyboard to me. I've NEVER been a giant fan of WASD or arrow keys. Mouse look used to be king, but actually POINTING **FEELS** better to me. Is it "as fast"? or "as accurate"? It's close. Yeah. Damn close. Despite its lack of "speed" or lack of "pinpoint accuracy" ... I'll trade that (esp. in a single player game) for the FEEL of this control system. The Good News(tm) is -- if this WERE a multiplayer game, EVERYONE would have the same controls and the playfield would be even.

The bar has been set. There will be NO MORE EXCUSES by third parties for ANY FPS game. Nintendo has paved the way. Take notes. Red Steel 2 ... Take notes. COD5 ... Take notes. Medal of Honor x ... Take notes.

Along with controls, let's chat about the "non FPS" controls - just as pushing, pulling, turning. At first, it sounded ... gimmicky. However, the rare occurances that you're actually doing this stuff, it feels very natural and context appropriate (sans the decon chamber - but I'll let it slide).

How does it look? Breathtaking. Everything is painstakingly done with detail. This is one of the few Wii games where you won't even utter a word about "the graphics could have been better" or "this game would have ROCKED in 1080p". The particles, the lighting. The people are a bit stiff, but the monsters are decently animated and you won't care while you're mowing them down.

Audio. Very well done. DD2.0 works just fine for this game. The sound sets the mood - the sounds work as they should; seamlessly, transparently. You don't notice the sound because it's done right. Make sense?

Now, I've only beem through the first level, but the game DOES have a couple of minor issues I have to mention.

The game is very linear (as I understand most Prime games are). The game should never remind you that it's a game. This did once - and it kinda broke the magic.

So what happened? There is a "puzzle" area where you are locked inside a couple of rooms, and these aliens have stolen the power module from the area, causing all the doors, etc. to power down. You're trapped until you shoot them all down, get the power cylinder, and return it to the power conduit thingie. First, you can't "lose" by "letting them get away" (yes, you can die). Basically, the bad guys will circle from lower level to upper level until you kill them all. I honestly would have rather the alien get away, and start over. The behavior is that one of the aliens always has the power cyclinder (you kill one, the next one picks it up), and they have a very linear (and obvious) path they take until you kill them. Very disappointing. The game broadcasted "Hey, look ... I have simple paths. I'm just a game. My alien paths are easy to follow". I hope this isn't something that continues in the game.

The map interface and "locale" system could have been improved. One reviewer said we could REALLY use an arrow or OSD that shows us that we're headed in the right direction. The 3D map is cool, but it's a bit clumsy at first and will surely piss people off early on.

The voice acting is good - when it's important. The generic 4-5 lines that the non-important NPCs say probably shouldn't have been there at all. It breaks the illusion. The feeling of "cannedism" is alive and well.

Level design is a bit dodgy so far (just one level in) - already requiring a "backtrack" mission. It fits CONTEXTUALLY, but the game better not continue with this or we'll have to call it HALO PRIME.

Now that I've had my bitches ... let me round it off by saying that the game is a NO BRAINER purchase - even at $49. Might be the first game on the DS (save maybe Scarface and ExciteTruck) that I can TOTALLY recommend at full retail price. If you're a Prime fan, get it. If you're an FPS fan, get it. If you are dying to see a Wii game done 99.9% right, get it. If you got a mod chip, buy it anyway. Support the Wii by voting with your money. As with any Wii or DS game - you need to see it, touch it before making any sort of final decision. Judge not by videos or screenshots. You can get away with that for systems where controls aren't an issue. This has to be experienced.

    Any questions?

Backtracking is an integral part of any Metroid game. It should be noted that the Hunters single-player missions were the least "Metroid" of any game to date. Care to elaborate?

    Haltroid? Metlo?

Even though it's highly recommended as a purchase, I'm still going to rent it. I've been having bad luck with Wii titles lately. Plus I have to let the bad taste that was Prime 2 Echoes go away. I tried to beat that game but the stupid key quests (hello, that is soooo Dark Forces and Doom ago), somewhat bland environment, the double layer back track (I know it's a Metroid thing but c'mon-having to trek about the same areas in the light and dark world?) and the story I could give a rat's ass about.

You actually put the qualifiers in this one - so I can't technically rip you a new one :-p

I think the controls are the best on a console to date, but it doesn't have the superiority over mouse and keyboard. If you ever played quake 2,3, or 4 (ONLINE or Nightmare bots) you'd know what I'm saying. You might be able to take something like this into one of those battlefield games but because of the movement scheme you have LESS control and LESS accuracy with the Wiimote. When you move the mouse there is more friction to keep your hand from moving to far but waving the wiimote in the air and stopping requires complete muscle control. I couldn't imagine trying to rail gun or snipe someone with these controls. Mind you it would be ALOT better than dual analog, but keyboard and mouse still are still in the lead.

    P.S.
How the hell can you strafe jump with the Wiimote and chuk?

    I guess I wasn't completely clear ...

To ME this control scheme is MORE COMFORTABLE and natural to me than the keyboard/mouse combo. And yes, if I took this into combat against kb/mouse players, I'd get my ass kicked. However, if EVERYONE was using the wiimote, the playing field would be even.

Just like with ExciteTruck (where I can't play another racing game that doesn't control like it) I could never play another FPS style game that doesn't control like Metroid.

You CAN strafe and jump, compliments of the lockon feature.
