I have a Sega Saturn and several games but am wondering about playing imports and back-ups burned onto CD-Rs.

Does anyone know if a boot disc is available for the Saturn?

Can the Saturn play CD-Rs like the Dreamcast?

I would love to play some of the imports for the Saturn but simply do not want to get into modding my system.

If you want to play imports, you'll have to get a Japanese system or a All-In-1 cart (extra RAM+save memory+Game Shark, etc...) for a US system.

As far as playing back-ups of games you own, you'll have to get your system modded.

I can answer those...

Saturn perperharals work on all formats, I know for a fact that my Action Replay all in one card will work on any machine and will allow any machine to play any game.

ask for slivers, you'll prolly will have to get it modded. apperantly there are some all in ones that allow playing slivers but i could not give you a name as I've not tested this out for myself yet because I dont have the speical software to back my saturn stuff up yet!

Are you saying the Action Replay thingy will allow you to play imports on the Saturn? I know the current AR version for the PS2 does that.

Ahhhh! Then that's the perfect solution! I've seen those on sale on EBAY for less than $15! Excellent! Thanks for the info!

The cart I use is the Action Replay 4M Plus. It has the following features...

*4MB back-up ram for game data saves, settings, and rankings.
*4MB ram expansion for games that require 1M or 4M ram such as Vampire Saviour, KOF96, Capcom fighters, etc.
*All territory converter. Play any and all USA, JPN, and EUR Saturn games.
*Pro-Action Replay cheat code function for hustlers and er, cheaters.
*Comms Link owners may transfer PC data and codes to the AR4M by parallel port.

Awesome! Why do people bother modding their systems when Action Replay has been making these things for so long?!? It can't be much cheaper! And it's a whole lot more hassle!

one problem I find which is kinda minor really is that the cart is not considered a cart to the system. in other words to save games on to the cart you first have to save onto the HD press reset (do not switch off otherwise you'll lose the data!) then copy the save file from the HD to the cart.

The Saturn uses battery backed-up RAM for saving game data to the system - the Saturn does not have a hard drive.

people mod their saturns to play backups

So Action Replay will not allow you to play back-ups?

nope, you cannot
