Looks like Nvidia gets the deal for the graphics card for the PS3. Microsoft picked ATI for the Xbox2 but it looks like Nvidia scored a better deal. Nvidia has already had the pleasure of having their balls cut off by MS with the Xbox.

I'd MUCH rather have an NVidia powered device than an ATI powered one. TO BE SURE.

Oh wow, more realistic blades of grass blowing in the wind that adds nothing to gameplay. :) I can care less what graphics the PS3 uses. All I care about is that it plays PS2 and PS1 games.

Why? Don't you already have a PS2 and PS1?

jamcat believes that a device in 2006 should play titles from 1995 if the company makes both the boxes - otherwise, its a waste of his time ...

Boy Shane, you seem hate backwards comaptability like you do convergance. What's the problem with backwards compatability? Why shouldn't the PS3 play PS2 and PS1 games? I guess Shane believes that every new system that comes out should render the software for the system before it obsolete.
I'm not a graphics whore, so I couldn't care if the PS3 had Voodoo 2 graphics. But I am big for backwards compatability. It was a factor in getting the Genesis (still play SMS games), the Game Boy Advance (still play GB/GBC games), and a PlayStation 2 (still play PS1 games).

Well, well.. To Shane's dismay, it looks like the PS3 WILL play PS2 and PS1 games. How ya like them apples! :) Now the PS3 will be a sure buy for me!

PS3 backwards compatibility addressed
Ken Kutaragi discusses PlayStation 3 support for PS2 and PlayStation games.
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has reportedly stated that the PlayStation 3 will feature backward compatibility for both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games. The news is hardly surprising, although previous rumors had suggested that the backward compatibility of the PS3 would only stretch to PS2 games.
"PSOne runs on the PlayStation 2 through emulation rather than actual hardware. PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software, and the format will continue forever," Kutaragi reportedly told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

As long as backwards compatibility does not interfere with their ability to innovate, then I am all for it. I don't desire to have a Pelican 12 port switch to switch between all the systems I have.

Well, besides jamcat and like 3 other people, nobody appears to care. I know a LOT of diverse people with PS2s. Adults, kids, casual players, dedicated players. So far, NONE of them use PS1 games on their PS2. So much for need. Its a bullet point.
We'll find out when Xbox2 works or tanks.
Games and game systems are designed to be disposable. Backward compatibility is akin to LONGETIVITY ... and LONGETIVITY isn't what modern developers are looking for (and you know that).
It makes total sense. Maybe MS has it right - why bother to make it backward compatible when no one gives a rat's ass about yesterday's games to begin with?
Generation Gimmie doesn't care.

It isn't really that important to me, but if they can throw it in there, why not? Does it really hurt anything if the system is backwards compatible?

Only if it doesn't COST ... cost innovation, cost performance, cost me money, cost me inconvenience.
If backward compatibility is really FREE - then yeah, I'm all for it. :)

How bit is the new XBox? If it's anything like the old one, having two of those under my TV would kinda preclude the need for a TV stand :p.

You know on now baby!
No seriously I've been known to pull out my copy of Street Fighter Alpha 2, Ehregiz, Soul Blade, Guilty Gear, Micro Machines v3, Ridge Racer (and Ridge Racer Rev. as well) etc etc
To be honest, most of the playstation 2's best games for me.... were on the playstation 1 heh!

So if you own a PS2 (and possibly a PS1) then why are you so freaking worried if the PS3 can play them? I mean for crying outloud when I buy a new system (as I've said ad infinitum) I care about what NEW it can do, not if it can play my old copy Gameboy Black & White copy of Tetris.

Doubtful, as I feel that backwards compatability will always be a cost to something else in the hardware. I would much rather see that time spent towards better innovative ideas for a game system, but that's just me.

word demo'man...
Although I do love the golden age I would like to see these new companies push the boat out when it came to game creativity just like sega's sonic team did for there console.

Exactly. Problem is that gaming in general has hit a stalemate as far as really anything original that can be done. Oh I'm sure someone might have some kind of new idea, but with today's crowd of wanting reruns of last year's rerun... well you get the idea.
