I'm trying to encode a PAL SVCD with TMPGEnc but the source file is stretched to 16.9. The original movie has a 2.33.1 aspect ratio and I'm having trouble sizing it back because the TMPG "clip frame" preview window is also streched to hell.

So to sum up my question

576(width) x ? = the 2.33.1 aspect ratio?

Not being much help here, I don't think that you want to clip any of the black boarders. It'll stretch the picture. I believe that you also want to maintain aspect ratio as well.

A better place to ask such questions is the forums on:

www.doom9.org

There are also many faq's on an assortment of video editing subjects.

Try setting aspect ratio to 1:1VGA and Video arrange method to Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2). Sometimes that will get things back close to where you can start playing around with the clip to get things the way you want them.

I've NEVER successfully converted a PAL video stream to NTSC without problems. Whether its video problems like yours, sound sync problems, 'catching up' frame issues. It sucks.

I know that most people SCREAM about how great TMPG is, but I recommend you look at another product for conversion:

Canopus Pro Coder (http://www.canopus.us/US/products/procoder_express/pm_procoder_express.asp)

For $60, its a great deal ... I use it EXCLUSIVELY for conversion from format to format.

Well, I am not one of those TMPGEnc lovers/fan boys, but I am one of those that hasn't had a problem converting PAL to NTSC. I have done a LOT of these type conversions and always get great results.

Really? What's the secret? I've had no luck with a perfect conversion.

I wish I could tell you. I don't know if it is just the files I convert or what. I have tried to help others that have problems and have never figured out the magic 'bullet', so to speak. If I ever do, I will post some info.

I always stick with the source's format. PAL works fine on my TV and player so I would have no reason to convert it to NTSC. They also look slightly better to boot.

Fixing this problem ended up being a no-brainer, making me embarrassed for making the topic. I just created a blank 640 x 272 image in paint shop pro, resized the width to 352 (I decided to go with VCD instead) while maintanting aspect ratio, and it gave me the correct height for the movie.
