I'm not sure, whether this has already been covered in another thread, if so, sorry, but I'm curious as to why people flash their Nintendo DS, and what the benefits would be?

Flashing the DS allows you to run homebrew software made for the DS, as well as NDS games... this opens the door for piracy unfortunately but by doing so you can play all the games you own loaded up on a SuperCard without having to carry around the carts...
As well, check the homebrew thread for what you can run..
Here's some examples of good homebrew software for the DS...
Moonshell (File browser)
DSOrganise (PDA type program)
DS Linux (Yep! Linux!)
ScummVM DS (for playing all those old LucasArts adventure games using the stylus instead of mouse)
and of course emus...
PicoDrive (Genesis emu), nesDS (NES emu)...

@DaMenace
I've just purchased a SuperKey, and I don't plan on flashing my DS... is it possible to recover the DS Lite if it bricks?
TIA

If you have another one to hand you can supposedly swap the bioses, flash then swap the bioses back.
Never done it but it is alleged to work.

Ahh okay, thanks for clearing that up for me DaMenace. I wouldn't pirate DS games, I rather have the satisfaction in purchasing them but I like the idea of running emulators on it, I'll pop over to the homebrew threat and have a nose around at some point.
Thanks again.

I have found the flashme7 version that allows brightness control, so I am flashing my lite when my MML arrives Wednesday. But what was this I heard about certain ds Phats getting brightness control when flashed with this FW? Is this true? Was it only units that had v5 FW from the factory? (my elect blue is a V4 i think)
Thanks,
Jeff

It seems to be true but its a total crapshoot and it doesn't seem to be very widespread...I've flashed my dad and wife's elect blues (Got rid of the health screen!) with Flashme7 and the MML and nothing was affected in terms of brightness control. Its so washed out and battery eating on the DS fat to be worth it anyway from what I can tell.
