On my work Laptop, if I go to run and enter cmd. I get the standard windows dos window. It comes back with my z drive (network drive). If I try standard ping or telnet commands it comes back with 'PING' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
If I enter ping whatever from the run promp itself, it works fine? Any ideas? I'm using Win2000 if it matters.

It sounds like the path isn't set correctly. Open your cmd window again and type in SET and hit Enter. Copy/paste the results in a reply here so we can see how your environment is configured. That should help diagnose what is going on.

Hmm, if this is a direct copy/paste with no editing, then these lines:
Files\ECSDLLs;C:\Ecsnt\GTWGCS\appl\bin;C:\PROGRA~1 \\bin;C:\PROGRA~1\
\bin\x11;C:\PROGRA~1\\mksnt;C:\Program Files\Reflection;C:\Oracle8i\bin;C:\Progr

stem32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System;C:\Program Files
\Explorer;;C:\WINNT\Baan\BIN
are obviously part of the path, but the Path= part of the line like you would expect to see is missing. It also looks like the beginning part of the path is chopped off. I would check your PATH definition under 'My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Environment Variables...' to see if your path definition is messed up. There is a max length for path, but off the top of my head I don't remember what it is. If there is anything you can delete from your path definition, do that and see if that helps.

Hey SafeCracker, did you finally manage to telnet out your laptop? If so, try this: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl
:)

Heck..... I don't even remember this :) Than again, it was almost 6 years ago.

I just wanted to post this "telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl" thing and couldn't find another thread about Telnet :)

I'm not even going to look at it but am going to take a guess it's that years-old ASCII Star Wars animation...Is it?
