Its strange. The subtitles display when playing these two DVDs on my computer but not any standalone player. I tried three standalone players, including my PS2 and while the subtitles can be turned on, they just don't appear.

The two DVDs are straight copies, no compression, and ripped with DVDdecryter. The originals were a bit banged up but there were no errors during the ripping process and subtitles do appear on them. Since the DVDs are Samurai flicks, subtitles are kinda required but since none of my english speaking DVDs have this problem it makes me wonder if this may be some kind of crazy copy protection.

As I do own the originals, its no big loss, but still ... I'd like to know if anyone else experienced this problem or what could possibly be the cause.

did you select them through the menu or the remote? usually, they'll come on if you select them through the menu.

btw, are these Criterion discs?

Thats what you get for trying to make copys of DVD's.

For some odd reason the programs don't copy the subtitles.

Then again I don't care for subtitlles and want AUDIO!

I selected them through both the menu and the remote.

They're Zatoichi and Lone Wold and Cub DVDs from AnimEigo. I got several other backups from both these series and they work fine. Its just these two that have this problem.

Thing is, the subtitles show up when playing them on the PC so they are there. Its just that they don't show up on player for some very odd reason.

Unfortunately for me, I loved heavy metal music a bit too much in my youth and require subtitles to enjoy even some english speaking movies. I'm not deaf and can enjoy most movies in audio only, but for films with complex plots, thick british accents, or lots of dialog, subs have become almost a necessity.

Funny the stuff I use to make my DVD backups never have a problem with copying subtitles. Must be your wild imagination Tally playing tricks on you again.

well, it's probably the way AnimeEigo made them. i hear they change color based on which person is speaking. do the originals have trouble dispaying the subtitles as well?
