I personally can't wait for this. The only thing the DS would be lacking is the 16 directions of the original control disc (the DS does only 8 )...

From the Intellivision Newsletter - November 2005:

INTELLIVISION LIVES! FOR NINTENDO DS
In 1980, Intellivision brought a number of innovations to home video gaming: animated characters, the first 16-bit processor, voice games. But best remembered is the unique Intellivision hand controller, featuring a directional disc, action buttons and a touchpad. Every game came with an overlay for the touchpad, with icons that helped the player quickly master the controls.

No game system has had a controller this sophisticated – until now. The Nintendo DS features a touch-sensitive screen to control gameplay. Using this touchscreen to display the overlay icons from the original Intellivision games, players will properly experience the thrill of these games for the first time in 25 years!

Intellivision Lives! for the Nintendo DS features over 30 classic Intellivision games running in full emulation. Introduced at the industry's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in May, the public had its first chance to try it out at the Classic Gaming Expo in August.

A release date has not yet been scheduled, but Intellivision Lives! should be available in the first half of 2006.

I covered this in a show, and posted about it (http://www.monroeworld.com/forums/showthread.php?p=21939#post21939) previously but ...

Any game that makes use of more directions uses the touch screen to simulate the 32 directions (that's what they told me). So it will be as close to reality as you're going to get.

I interviewed Keith Robinson at great length, played Astrosmash on my DS, and we cover this a lot. In fact, I'll be starting his interview in November's show :)

I think I'd prefer an analog stick instead of the d-pad to best simulate the Intellivision's pad. I'd want the touch screen for the overlay (number pad) that they seem to be using it for. I guess we'd need two touch screens to go along with the top screen to REALLY nail it via touch.

'lo,

...and the news is not good. Listened to the new show and thought i'd relay the latest that i've heard. Keith Robinson and I.P. hosted one of their Retropia parties at the Arena Interactive Lounge in LA last weekend, and appeared on a special weekend episode of the All Games Interactive radio show. I'm trying to put a clip together of the audio, but the jist is that he says the game's completely done...and that no publisher wants to do it. That they've gone to just about everyone and that no one wants to do the game when it's not a potential 'million seller'. (which was kinda surprising, but oh well) He even went to Nintendo to ask about how they might even be able to self-publish, but N said no.

Now if Womp had the name/company of the one contact that expressed interest, i believe i can get that info to Keith and see if it's an avenue not yet explored and maybe we can see if we can get that Intellivision DS love connection going.

Mastiff if I recall seemed interested, I sent the info to them and I believe Majesco some months ago. But they wanted personal info that I couldn't supply. I wonder if they would sell the ROM of it? I'd buy it in a flash.

Either way this is VERY upsetting news...I wish there were something we could do about this.

Ignition Entertainment is next on my list.

gavv if you could msg me any contact info on Robinson you can...:)

It would be a very big shame if this release never happened - IL on the X Box is all fine and dandy, but all the best games really need the pad buttons, and the DS touch screen would have been an ideal emulation - I mean if Atari Retro was somehow deemed good enough to retail who in their right mind is going to balk at such a superior release as this?

Atari Retro and how much it sucked ass probably has a lot to do with why no one wants to give Intellivision Lives a chance. It's a damn shame.

Who's publishing the Epyx Commodore games? Maybe they'd be willing to take a chance on it?

For those in Southern California, check this out. If you look partway down, at the next Retropia on September 30, you'll be able to play Intellivision Lives for DS.

I didn't realize that it had an Intellivision emu available. That's a pretty good alternative for now. Although you have to admit that using the touch screen for the buttons on the Intellivision would be pretty nice.

Just listening to some old RGR's and heard the interview with Kieth Robinson. Anyone heard anything at all about Intellivision Lives DS? It sounded like it was nearly ready in the interview.

I was personally involved in a meeting with Keith Robinson (sitting at the same conference table, even) and a developer here in the O.C. and it has yet to take off. I will let you all know if I hear anything further.

As far as it being nearly ready, it's all ready except for the front end menu system. I played all the games on the developer cartridge myself and was really impressed. It had all the overlays on the touch screen and they were brilliantly done. And it already has wi-fi capability (local) for many of the games like Frog Bog, Shark Shark, their sports games, etc.

Best part of Triple Action Bi-planes was crashing the plane half a second after take off because you pressed the disc wrong. Hilarity!

Holy crap, I thought I was the only dumb-ass that crashed the plane on blue Max.
I remember when we got that game WOW it was the best ever!
But it always came down to the landing to get more fuel.
I think that I spent a week inching down to the landing gently, gently then crashing.
Only to watch my buddy land without even trying.
Man that was a pisser to learn that I had the whole concept wrong.
The day we got that game we stayed up all night bombing the bus that would sometimes come across the bridge.
What a great time! Defiantly a cherry high moment.

It's BS to see that this can't get a proper release but "Imagine: GerbilZ Gynocologist" does.

Nintendo's really getting too big for their britches. They've got more money that God, so they're tyrannical about stupid things like this. Meanwhile, DSiWare is flooded with piecemeal rehashed slivers of two-year-old games published by...Nintendo.

I think he should just say F**k it and put it out as homebrew for purchase. Sure 90% of those with an R4 will pirate it, but at least he will recoup some of his investment.

What really p!sses me off is that Apple reaps all the benefits of Nintendo's short-sightedness. The freakin' iPhone will get this collection while the actual gaming system is left out in the cold. If I have to watch one more "There's an app for that" commercial, I'm going to have to hunt down Steve Jobs and give him one hell of a wedgie!

Apparently Nintendo won't allow emulated games on DSiWare. That sucks as 1) I've been looking forward to Intellivsion Lives for a long time and 2) DSiWare would be a perfect platform for it.

Right but obviously that doesn't apply to their Gameboy Virtual Console store...

Intellivision on there would rock. A shame many of the good games are in IP hell such as TRON and D&D.

Yeah, the Tron games probably would be tougher w/out the license, but they redid D&D Cloudy Mountain license-free on the Inty 10-in-1 plug & play ("Crown of Kings" or something). I'd be all over a portable version of any of the Inty D&D games.

Tarmin was what I was referring to especially. It was very ahead of it's time, very deep considering the consoles at the time and the fact it was played in FIRST PERSON perspective was amazing. People don't give the INTV enough credit and it is a damned shame.

Tom Loughry is my hero for Treasure of Tarmin. Way ahead of its time.

Speaking of emulated 8-bit dungeon crawlers on DSi Ware, I've been playing Gateway to Apshai on my XE lately, and that's a great game. I'd definitely throw down for it on DSiWare.

WTF! No emulators on DSiware?! I can only guess this is either to make sure Nintendo has 100% share of any DSiware emulators, OR to prevent what happened to the VC games (original roms replaced with different ones, creating, essentially a 'whatever' emulator for the price of a single download). I've been waiting years for this and it seems we will never actually get it :(
