View Full Version : Still have your copy of Diablo II?

Here's a tip I learned recently that I thought I'd share.

If you still have your old copy of Diablo 2 floating around and still have your cd-key, you can go to battle.net and enter your cd-key under "redeem game code" and it will associate it with your battle.net account (assuming you have an account, if not, sign up for one). Once you do this, you can put your cd's away and download the client straight from battle.net, which doesn't require you to have the play cd inserted like the regular cd installation does. By the way, the latest version finally supports Windows 7.

This is great for netbook gamers especially due to the lack of an optical drive. You can also do this with the Lords of Destruction expansion pack, Warcraft III and it's expansion, and Starcraft and it's expansion. Unfortunately, Warcraft II (even the battle.net edition) isn't supported hehe.

Way ahead of you. I've played through Diablo II so many times, so I figured it'd be a good idea to transfer it to my account.

Hehehe, yeah, I revisit Diablo II every so often and this is a godsend. I got away with using a disc image on my netbook, but this makes it a lot easier as well.

Thanks for reminding me, I really should go and play Diablo and Diablo 2, never actually finished either of them as everytime I got near the end we ended up moving or the computer stopped working. I shall have to go hunting for them tomorrow, hopefully my dad still has them.

Thanks for the tip! While I'm nostalgic for the gameplay, is there anything one can do to sharpen up the graphics a bit? Mods, etc?

There is a mod that lets you increase the resolution, but it doesn't work with the latest patch which brings Windows 7 compatibility. Blizzard doesn't want to increase the resolution officially because they feel that increasing the viewable play field would give the player an unintentional advantage, especially in multiplayer games.

The 800x600 looks fine on a netbook. On screens that support larger resolutions, playing in a window seems to look a little less blurry hehe.

Good pointer. Thanks Alex. Now if I can still find my Starcraft CD-key.

With the latest patches for Diablo 2 and Starcraft you don't need to insert the CD to play either.
