Interesting article. Looks like the tree huggers want you to trash your console... Unless it's a Wii that is.

and I thought they just wanted me to turn off the 360 when not playing it. Oh well maybe it can be converted into a planter or something.
I have the consoles, tv, computers and modem on their own surge protectors so when not in use I just kill power to the surge protector or just unplug what I am not using.

Video game consoles consume a "staggeringly high" amount of energy, according to a report the Natural Resources Defense Council is releasing on Wednesday. How much electricity do they use each year? About as much as it takes to power the city of San Diego.
Shut down San Diego then. I don't live in a city and see no need for them.

Is this how you are going to act for the next four years? Are you going to continue to be bitter that the Democrats won? It seems that you have been increasingly flame-baiting with your posts lately. Just an observation.
Well, there are a number of ways that you can interpret this report. Attacking the messenger and using insults such as "tree-hugger" isn't going to help any point that you are trying to make. I think this information is more for the console manufacturers. One of my favorite things about the Wii is how little energy it consumes. It's been built from the ground up to consume less energy. All of us, deep down, want energy efficient products (if for nothing else but to save money on our electric bill).
I'm just as guilty as any of you guys. I leave my PC on 24/7, and all my consoles are plugged in all the time. Now that I've read this article, I'm tempted to get one of those power killer devices so my various video game consoles aren't sucking power when they are switched off. You shouldn't be reading this report as an attack on gamers, but an attack on game manufacturers for not taking extra steps to ensure their systems are energy efficient. When devices are not optimized to use energy efficiency, it hurts your electric bill and it hurts the environment.
I think we could all agree that the console manufacturers can take some initiative in making their consoles more energy-efficient, for both electric bills and the environment. As for me personally, I'm sick of breathing smog-filled air and watching the polar ice caps melt. Something needs to be done, and the longer we wait the more drastic the intervention will have to be.

This article has nothing to do with politics, dude. I know the enviro-nazis are generally liberal leaning folk, but I never associated them directly with democrats. As for me being bitter, I'm not. I'm over the whole thing. I really am. I'm not drinking the cool-aid by any means, but the American public needs a kick in the rear every so often, and this is it. :)
Be happy dude. Your guy gets a chance and by the looks of it, he's going to have his hands full for the next 4 years...

I consider the term "tree-hugger" to be insulting. It's generally used to make fun of people who are concerned over the environment and call them hippies for actually caring about the environment.
I'm just sensing this knee-jerk reaction to anything that is good for the environment. Asking console manufacturers to work towards energy efficiency is a REASONABLE request. It doesn't mean we are all hippies wearing unbleached fiber organic T-shirts trying to ban the use of plastic bags. Isn't there a happy medium between that extremism and the extremism of complete apathy towards the environment?

I don't consider the term "tree-hugger" to be insulting, and I consider myself to be one.
I do turn off my PCs when I am leave for the day, and try not to leave my console on for different reasons.

Microsoft Xbox 360 ranks a close second. If you shut it down when you're not playing a game or watching a movie, it costs about $11 to operate annually. Leaving it on continuously will cost you $103.
When they say 'shut it down', do they mean shutting it down the normal way, or actually unplugging it? Does anybody leave their 360 or PS3 running when they're not playing games?
As for the Wii, it's on all the time, and I don't know how to turn the f**king thing off completely. If there's a way without unplugging it, I'd like to know how, so I don't have to look at the orange/yellow light all the time.

Hey I bought a Honda Fit that gets me 32mpg, I've been using fluorescent light bulbs for years, I have a programmable thermostat for my energy efficient air conditioner, had R19 insulation installed in my house, installed a timer on my water heater so that it only turns on to heat the tank once in the morning, I recycle bottles, cans, plastic and cardboard products on a regular basis and am even considering the purchase of a solar heater for my pool this winter...
The problem is there's common sense and then there's wacko-sense. Telling consumers to stop playing video games because their consoles drain too much energy is picking on the wrong party. Instead of working with the console manufacturers, these bean sprout eating, tree hugging caribou worshiping wackos target the consumer. If I'm not using my PC, I turn it off, I never leave my Wii or xbox running unattended. Who the hell does that?

Wait isn't the Wii made out of Plastic? and what about the other Dangerous parts like the controller?
Seriously! why don't they go After High School for leaving tons of lights on at night or what about those "Long Reality" buildings!

I LOVE this. I'm just wondering how long it will be before we stop the "environmentalist" fringe from returning us to living in caves. Don't drive, don't use your TV, don't use your cell phones, don't use oil for anything, and for heavens sake, don't use more than your fair share of ANYTHING! I mean, because we all turn on all our lights, have the thermostat set at 82 all day long during the winter and 62 all summer long. We all leave our windows open and the fridge door open, and we all waste as much as we possibly can because, well, we're not actually Paying for it are we? (that's sarcasm)

The problem with understanding extreme views is that they require people to look outside the comfort of modern life and consider the greater picture. The truth is scary sometimes. If things continue the way they are, we won't last another 100 years.

I'm not sure what the uproar is about. The article simply states you should turn off your console when not in use.

Haha. I had the same problem. I felt like even if I unplugged it from the wall it would find a powersource. There is an option to turn off auto update. That might fix it for you.

I think you are on the opposite fringe. You are of the fringe where you just deny any serious damage humans are doing to the environment without any care or concern. How do I know?
You looked at a sad picture that Flare posted (http://www.monroeworld.com/forum/showthread.php?p=182783&highlight=polar#post182783) of a polar bear drowning because of the polar ice caps melting, and you said this:
Please, a global warming story? How the heck did they get 400 miles out there in the first place? I seriously can't see 400 miles of ice melting quickly enough, well, outside of maybe a nice round of bombs... Sorry, not sad. Same kind of pic was used in that inconvenient movie and was proven to be a fake. But they'd make nice rugs.....
Well, if you bothered to read the article Flare posted, you'd discover the reason why the polar bears were drowning was because the ice float they were on melted. Their homing instinct was telling them to swim north, towards the icecaps, but because of global warming melting the icecaps, the closest northern ice platform was 400 miles away. There was actually land 60 miles to the south, but the polar bears had no way of knowing that.
And what a cold, terrible response! Honestly, I hope you were making some kind of sick joke and you didn't mean what you said. It's just cold hearted and disgusting.
